Macclesfield, May 22. (From a correspondent.) Another paltry trick has been played off by the corporation junta of this town: A few weeks ago,
Mr. Ayton (father of Miss Fanny Ayton, of the Opera House) sent in his resignation as a capital burgess; and amongst the candidates who offered
themselves as his successor, was Jasper Hulley, Esq., of the One House, a gentlman of high respectability, great personal worth, and considerable
talents.  The voice of the freemen was decidedly in his favour; but the few senators of the borough, who rule the remainder of their brethren, had
promised his support to Mr. Hulley, succeeded in electing Mr. Molineaux, by a spendid majority of three! in the teeth of the general wish of the town.

Monday, September 25, 1826, London - WONDERFUL ESCAPE — Monday. morning, about five o’clock; the gardener of Jasper Hulley, Eq. of the
One-House, near this town, went out with the intention of repairing a fence, at a short distance from the house, taking with him the necessary tools
for that purpose. As he did not return at the usual time, the family became somewhat alarmed, and at five in the afternoon men were sent out in
search of him, and after pursuing their enquiries until eleven o’clock at night he was discovered at the bottom of the Raven Tunnel Pit, which is
thirteen yards deep.  When extricated from this perilous situation, the only account he could give of the accident was that he supposed he must have
fallen while cutting brambles at the mouth of the pit for when he came to himself,  after recovering from the stunning effects of the fall, he was not a
little astonished to find that he was in such a situation.  He supposes that he must have remained some hours in a state of insensibility.   The only
injury he has sustained is a slight sprain of the ancle, and a few scratches.  - Macclesfield Herald.

Descriptive Account of the Mines - Page 10 (incl.)  Many of the mines in Lancashire are very wet. In some I visited, the water pours out of
the roof to  such a degree, that persons descending are completely wet through by it.  George Brown, at Messrs Broom and Hulley's, gives the
following description of the mines in the neighbourhood of Rainow:-
"The small mines in the neighbourhood of Rainow are nearly all exceedingly wet; I have worked there when half my body has been under water, and
we have one man working in the deep level, who works constantly in water half way up his sides. The seams there are only fourteen inches thick, so
that the pickmen are obliged to lie on their sides."

Manchester Times  24 Jan 1852
Macclesfield - a troublesome neighbour.  At the county police office, on Tuesday, a man named Nixon, a small farmer at Rainow, was charged under
the following circumstances: Mrs Hulley, the wife of Jasper Hulley, Esq. of Rainow, stated that she was in company with another lady and five
children, on the highway, near her home and passing the dependent, who stood with a gun, he said.   "Now I will have at you".  When they had got a
few yards past he fired the gun, which much alarmed witness and her company.  From other evidence, it appeared that defendant was in the habit of
firing off his gun frequently, sometimes as late as 12 o'clock at night, and apparently from no other motive, but to annoy Mr Hulley and his family.
This conduct could only be accounted for by the fact that Mr Hulley’s man had impounded his (defendant’s), donkey, which, however, Mr Hulley
liberated at his own expense.  Mr Hulley had also impounded some sheep which had been found trespassing.  Mr Hulley said that he did not consider
his own life or the lives of his family safe.  A son of Mr Hulley deposed to seeing the ladies and children pass the defendant, and to seeing him fire the
gun several times, but not in the direction of them.  The bench ordered the defendant to find sureties to keep the peace, himself in Ł20, and two
bondsmen in Ł10 each.
Manchester Times  21 Aug 1852
Macclesfield - Caution to apprentices.  On Monday, at the Town Hall, James Slack was charged with absenting himself from the service of Mr Hulley,
he being his apprentice.  Mr Hulley, not wishing to press the charge, the magistrates discharged him on promising to return to his employee and
paying expenses.

DEATHS - On the 11th Inst. At The One House, near Macclesfield, Jasper Hulley Esq. Aged 72 years.
Page 4 The Late Jasper Hulley Esq. of the One House - Few of our townsmen will read unmoved the bare record, elsewhere in our columns, of the
death of Jasper Hulley of the One House.  Although he took but very little active part in the affairs of this town, his removal from the midst of us is an
event that cannot fail to cause very deep regret to all his friends and neighbours.  The poor, especially, loose in him, a tender and sympathetic
friend, a ready and most generous benefactor.
Mr. Hulley died suddenly on Sunday afternoon, the eleventh inst., in the middle of his family, in the house where so many of his forefathers had lived
and died. His memory will be held very dear by all who knew him; and all, alike himself, value that which is honest, and brave, and true. His genuine
and simple piety, the gentle and unstudied grace of his manner, the tenderness and affectionate warmth of his love, will long be remembered by
those whose present sorrow for his sudden and unlooked-for removal is exceeding great.

Dear Done
I was pleased to hear from you, and note all you tell me.  It may be well I should tell
you, that in my last Will my trustees have set aside a sum from my Estate in  trust for you.
Sums have been allocated to your sisters  May & Ellen. You may have heard this
from your father or Ethel?  I was free to dispose of what My father left to me as I choose
I did however promise your Father and your Aunt Ellen Hall (Nee Hully) that I would leave
Something to you & May & Ellen I know nothing of your dad’s disposition of his Estate
The One House Estate he sold however. The property had been in Hulley possession
for generations as perhaps you know.

Now, as I have touched 82 and am in good health with a fair memory, I can put you wise as to Hulleys.

Your grandfather Jasper Hulley married for first wife, a Miss Bostock who owned land.

There were two children Jasper & Mary. The former died of some illness unmarried. Later on, your
Grandfather married my father’s sister Maria Holland of Macclesfield Issue Holland, Arderne, Ellen,
Maria, Elizabeth & Anne (all own cousins to me) Holland died unmarried.

Ellen married Dr. Henry Broderick of Indian Medical Service who saw Service in the Mutiny prior to his
marriage. He and Ellen spent some time in India. Broderick died in India somewhere about 1868
of sunstroke I think.

Ellen came home (no family).  Later Ellen married General Durham Hall of Central India Horse.
On Hall’s retirement they lived in London. (No family). Date of Hall’s passing on I don’t at moment recollect.
Ellen  continued to live at Brechin Place S.W. until her death, when house passed on to Hall’s people.
Ellen was fortunate in enjoying the pensions from two husbands! Also use of  house & furniture,
and some income from W.H. for her life.
Maria Hulley married W. Chinner a man of some means. His father was one of the first to make gas fittings
shortly after gas came into use in houses. Maria has presented you with some cousins (men). I have
met only one, and have not kept in touch.  Elizabeth married the Revd. F. Binley Dickinson who was
vicar of Ashford (no family). Anne married a parson one Meurant.  They lived near Derby (no family)
both dead. Some 30 years ago I had 13 own cousins. Hollands, Hulleys & Houghtons latter on my
mother’s side whose sister married a Houghton of Chorley Lancashire. All these cousins dead but
Three viz. your father, Jean  Macrobin & Major G.F. Holland.
Your father & your Uncle Holland Hulley bought land at the Noodsberg in the  fifties and kept Sheep & cattle;
a poor show as to profit. I went out to see them in Jany. 1865 and staid just a year.  On my  return I continued
my chemical studies in Manchester until death of my father in 1878. He had remarried in 1866 and lived at
Windsor. I can’t say when your dad married and lived at The Wilderness Holland (Hollie) came home and
lived with his half sister Mary in various places.
When you write home keep this information to yourself.  I am the only one alive who can give you the
details of your father’s connections on the Hulley side, and who his sisters married of whom only one had
children Mrs Chinner.

Your ‘dad’ began life as a mate in the Green’s ships. His first ship was The Windsor of Port of London. He made voyages to
India, Australia China and possibly Japan and brought home some  curiosities. Your Great Grandfather raised a troop of
soldiers at his own expense at time of threatened invasion by Napoleon I which ” was greatly to his credit”. All sons of
farmers I was told. Napoleon, who had constructed A flotilla of flat boats, Is reported to have said I have fifty plans for the
invasion but not one for getting back. So he never landed a man on our island. The Sawyers are in Switzerland. Nesta
is an exponent on skates and has won medals. I keep wonderfully well save for small ailments, but spend the Winter in the

PS Did you ever meet John Ogilvie Holland, or his son John C. Holland latter is married has a job connected with mine
ventilation at ‘Joburg’. Formerly did assaying at “Knights  Deep”. J.O.H. farmed at Rietsprint, Transvaal, and died there
some 4 years ago.
Your dad is in  a poorly way. I’m told nearly blind. He gets to his club however in the  morning with Ellie’s help, and
chats with his chums.
I much fear these Communists will make for revolution. The Trade Unions sympathetic with them, and are above the law.
They want all mans of production of wealth to belong to the workers – such as mines, Railways, docks, & ships!! You will
read of the wild ideas of  abolishing “the tyranny of Capital” in your newspapers. What is feared is the start of civil war by
means of strikes all over the country- no coal, no transport, no gas, all the same there will be some killing before all is Ended.
