Note by Julie Kimpton:
One of the family *legends* appears to be true! Job Hooley and family arrived in the USA in 1898
These details were found on the Ellisislandrecords.org website, and are taken from a copy of original ship's manifest. (on file). By the 1880's the journey time to the United States by ship had been slashed by the introduction of steam power and it was possible to cross the Atlantic in only a few days. After 1892, nearly all arrivals- including those just visiting, travelled through Ellis Island immigration centre, New York.
Name: Job Hooley
Ethnicity: English
Place of Residence: Oldham
Occupation: Miner
Date of Arrival: April 14th 1898
Age on Arrival: 40 years
Gender: M
Marital Status: M
Ship of travel: Majestic
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England, UK departed 6th April 1898
Also travelling with Job were his second wife Sarah Ann (I wonder if she ever knew about Job...!) aged 34, a homeworker, and their daughter Beatrice, aged 10. Both give their nationality as English and last place of residence Oldham. They were carrying 40 US dollars in total, and had paid for the trip themselves. They said that this was their first visit to the United States. The stated purpose of the trip was to visit Sarah Ann's mother, Sarah Culvert at 45, Union Street, Kearley [sic] N. J. The ship's manifest states that their physical and mental state is "good".
Job was still in the USA in 1910, living with his daughter Beatrice who had now married Tomas Pattelison, some two years earlier. Job is described as a widower, aged 50 (he was actually almost 60!) and *if* the rest of what he said was true, Sarah must have died around the time of their daughter's marriage. The family were living in rented accommodation at North 4th St, Harrison, Hudson County NJ, this is only a short way south of Kearney, where Job said he was visiting when originally arrived in the USA, and only two or three miles from Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. it seems as though he was the only wage earner in the family, since his son in law Thomas was out of work, and said he had been out of work for 20 weeks in the previous year, 1909. Another change is that he now states he can both read and write

1885 24 Oct - Cheshire Observer etc - CHESHIRE QUARTER SESSIONS - TRIALS OF
PRISONERS - Before Horatio Lloyd, Esq., Deputy Chairman. The following prisoners
pleaded guilty to the several offences with which they were indicted, and were
sentenced as under: (incl.) Thomas Abbott (17), tailor, and George St. Ledger (16),
labourer, stealing 30s. the moneys of Elizabeth Savage, at Macclesfield, on the 28th
August; also with breaking and entering a shop and stealing therein fifteen pence in
copper and two ounces of tobacco, the property of Samuel Hooley, at Hurdsfield, on
31st August. Abbott, a decent-looking little lad, told a pitiful story of having been in a
reformatory and being let out for good conduct when his sentence had only half
expired. He has no father and no home, and said he was forced to steal or starve.
He was sentenced to two month’s imprisonment, the Deputy Chairman kindly
explaining to him that in the meantime the chaplain would see what could be done for
him. St. Ledger was admonished and nominally sentenced to a day’s imprisonment.
Mr. Roberts and Mr. E. Honoratus Lloyd prosecuted.

A FATAL FIGHT
Moses Pownall, collier, was remanded at Stockport today charged with the manslaughter of Holland
Hooley, blacksmith. Hooley and Pownall were travelling on a tram on Saturday night, when they
quarrelled, and on alighting, they fought, Hooley dying this morning from his injuries.

1893 07 Mar - Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser
ALLEGED MANSLAUGHTER AT STOCKPORT.
A man names Moses Pownall, 35, collier, of Hazel Grove, is in custody at Stockport, charged with the
manslaughter of Holland Hooley, blacksmith, employed by the Stockport and Hazel Grove Tramway
Company.
The couple were passengers by the last tram from Stockport to Hazel Grove on Saturday night, and a
quarrel ensued on the top of the tram, which was renewed when the men alighted near the Crown Inn,
just on the borders of the borough boundary. The men fell, Hooley being uppermost. Pownall, it is
alleged, struck him heavily in the face. Hooley shouted, "I'm done." the couple were then separated, and
Hooley, who could not use his limbs, was taken to the tramway stables.
On Sunday morning he was conveyed home in a cab, and later was ordered to be taken to the infirmary,
where his depositions were taken on Sunday night.. Hooley succumbed yesterday morning, and Pownall
was charged with manslaughter.
At the police-court yesterday, Mr. Richard Brown, solicitor, defended the prisoner, a powerful-looking
man. Detective Quigley gave evidence as to the arrest of the prisoner at the infirmary, after he had heard
the depositions of the deceased. - The Chief Constable applied for a remand until Thursday in order that
the inquest might be held. - the prisoner was remanded and allowed out on a heavy bail.
