International Genealogical Index

This is a collection of baptisms and marriage entries from parish registers collected by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). Its coverage over the English counties is varied with some listed baptisms of some counties as low as 10%. It is considered to be a useful starting point for research but the golden rule applicable to any entry is to check the original document (or copy of same) to check it for other details not shown on the IGI. These could be locations of families, mothers' maiden names and occupations of the head of family.

Note: Although the IGI does not cover all parishes, the data below is a broad indication of the spread of the surname. It matches that of the GRO indexes and the telephone directory entries in 1984 thus demonstrating that the family has not spread out very much in the last 160 years.

  • Lancashire - 491 entries
  • Yorkshire - 324 entries
  • Derbyshire - 271 entries
  • Cheshire - 137 entries
  • London - 62 entries
  • Westmorland - 57 entries
  • Other counties less than 40

Total entries for England = 1465; Wales = 9; Scotland = 2; Ireland = 22.
