Born 1785 Ecclesfield (elder brother Francis b1779 - joined RA in 1800 discharged in 1816). Enlisted at Rotherham 11th Feb 1807 aged 19. height 5' 5 1/2": complexion fair: hair dark: eyes grey: occupation: cutler. Discharged 20th July 1816 (reduction in RA strength) pay £2 0s 71/2d. Married Ann Brangan in County Cork c1809

Coy embkd at Cork on T/p Lady Hamilton on 29.10 and mustered on board ship at sea on 1.11 and 1.12: Coy landed at Port Royal, Jamaica on 26.12 (see also WO 10/1203)
Note:- There are no references to Capt John Betterson's Coy from 1807 to 1816.
