Family Trees - South Africa

  Reference Description
PAF SouthAfrica01

Descendants of Richard Hulley, born 1785 at Ecclesfield, South Yorkshire.

Latest Developments - September 2008

Marlene received an invitation to the Zulu Traditional wedding of Chief Lucky Fodo and mentioned to me about the proposed Trust Fund which was being set up by members of the Hulley family in South Africa to assist in the development of the native village and the Hulley farm at Hopewell. If any member of the family wishes to find out more about this, please contact Marlene at kpt385REMOVE@THISsasktel.net.

Loren Hulley Norton has advised that her brother Seth and his wife Chantal has had a baby boy - Georden Anthony. He has been added to the family tree.

Welcome to Anthony Charles Hulley of Gauteng, South Africa. Anthony is currently researching his direct ancestors and hopes to let me have the details for inclusion in the FT.

Latest Developments - July 2008

John Powell (not Hancock as shown previously) has had a reply concerning the Cecil Frank Hulley mystery. Mary Pearson advises that the author of "Where Lions Once Roamed" was her great grand-father Cecil Malcolm Hulley. So it's back to the drawing board in the search for Cecil Frank Hulley who was born in April 1904 and was from Cape Town. Cecil's father was William Hulley. Does anyone out there know about this person?

I am surprised that no-one from SA has contacted me about the two South African soldiers who were prisoners of war in WW2. Their names are shown on the Military section of this website - go to 2nd WW Returning POWs to find the details..

Latest Developments - June 2008

More updates to this family tree have been received from the following researchers since the last publication:-

Mary Pearson - Information about Thomas Benjamin born 1860;

Victor Hulley - Descendants of Isaac Victor Hulley born 1946;

John Powell - Many details about the Hancock and related Hulley families;

Sue Hulley - Descendants of Lumley Alexander Hulley born 1967;

Marlene Hulley - Descendants of Peta Louise Hulley born 1984.

The puzzle about the Cecil Frank Hulley born in Cape Town in 1904 may have been solved by John Powell. He recalls that he found the book title that he had been searching for: "Where Lions once Roamed" by Cecil HULLEY, Pioneer Head, Salisbury (Rhodesia) 1969.  It seems it's about Rhodesia and not the Eastern Transvaal as he thought.  He asks "Do you not think this might be the Cecil Frank HULLEY, born in Cape Town, you are looking for?" If you have any information please contact John at ctrhine@onetel.com.

Latest Developments - January 2008

The Family gathering held on 22 and 23 September last was a resounding success with more than 100 Hulleys and their families attending the events. Grateful thanks from all those who enjoyed the two days are given to Marlene who worked tirelessly to make the event such a memorable one.

For Joan and I personally the highlights of the Gathering were the visit to the Hulley graveyard at Hopewell Farm and the wonderful welcome at his village from Chief Lucky Fodo and his people. They made the day for us in many ways and we will always remember their warm welcome and hospitality. We have many picture souvenirs of the day and our favourite depicting the presentation to Chief Fodo of the Lancashire County Coat of Arms is shown below.

Finally, I am seeking assistance to track down a person from South Africa. He was named Cecil Frank Hulley who was born in April 1904 and was from Cape Town.   Cecil's father was William Hulley. If you have any information about Cecil - no matter how small - please get in touch with me.

Latest Developments - September 2007

The arrangements for the reunion on 22 and 23 September are now in place and we are hoping for a marvellous turnout. Marlene has worked wonders in organising the event and our grateful thanks are due to her. Joan and I are looking forward to visiting South Africa and meeting many unseen friends. We hope that those attending will find my talk both interesting and informative. I have also included a short ten minute section covering the One House in Cheshire, the seat of the Hulley family in that county which goes back to 1490.

More details about Richard Brangan Hulley b. 1810 have been received from Marlene and added to his entry.

Congratulations to Dr. Brian Hulley whose son Stephen Clifford and wife Karen has produced a grandson Austin Luke for him.

Ray Lazarus –    she has sent details of a Diary kept by her Great Grandfather Edward Jackson Hulley (1862-1939).  It covers the period Nov 1890 to Mar 1892, and is a fascinating insight into the work of a farmer and his family and is well worth reading.  See the Notes of Edward Jackson Hulley b.1862.
Ray has also sent information about Joseph 1823-1896; Edward J. 1862-1939; John F. 1901 – ?;  Lillias M. 1905 -; Herbert W. 1866 – 1944.

Marlene Hulley -       As well as organising the forthcoming Reunion in September, Marlene has found time to send details of the descendants of Reginald Hulley born 1935.

Latest developments – June 2007

Welcome to Warren Kretzinger who is a descendant of Bryan Reginald (“Rex”) Hulley born 1932. Warren has sent details of Rex’s descendants which has increased the Family Tree to 1355 persons.

Sha Redfern is seeking information about James Daniel Hulley born and 1893 and his spouse Dora Vere/Vear. If anyone has any knowledge of this couple please let me know and I will pass it on to Sha.

I have finished the preparation of my talk at the Reunion in September and look forward to giving it to those who are coming.  It is hoped to have a CD of the presentation which will include the following:

Latest developments – August 2006

1. I have now updated the South African Hulley family tree above and have included all the additions, corrections and amendments received since the last update in March 2005.

2. I have also been to Ireland to seek further information about Ann Brangan, the wife of Richard Hulley the first family settler in SA. I had previously established that a RICHARD HULLEY or ULLEY married an ANN BRANGAN in Cork around 1809. They had the following children in Ireland:

RICHARD BRANGAN HULLEY bap 5 Sep 1810 at Bandon

ANN HULLEY born 10 Aug 1813 possibly on Bere Island

SARAH HULLEY bap 27 Dec 1815 at Bandon.

I know from Army records that Richard was stationed on Bere Island with the Royal Regiment of Artillery as a Gunner 2 Class from Jan 1812 to Jul 1815.

Because their first child Richard Brangan was baptised at Bandon in 1810 a search was made through the parish registers in that area for Richard and Ann’s marriage without success. Parishes searched were Ballymoney, Ballymartle (Ballinhassig), Innishannon, Kilmeen, Kinsale, Nohoval, Magourney, Murragh, and Ringcurran. Because Bandon was a Church of Ireland 'hot-spot' in the early 19th century, the registers of the two Church of Ireland parishes in Bandon held at the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin were searched and I spent a day going through them. Here is what I found.

Ballymodan Parish Church

Marriages

1767 31 Aug Isaac BRANGHAN and Ann BURCHILL

1806 9 Feb Marmaduke BRANGHAM and Margt BURCHILL

Christenings

1789 12 Jul Dorcah of Isaac BRANGHAM

1789 12 Jul Ann of Isaac BRANGHAM Rec'd

Burials

1798 20 Jun Isaac Brangham

1800 20 Apr Anne wife of Jn.Brangan

1802 17 Dec Isaac Brangham

Kilbrogan Parish Church

Christenings

1810 26 Jan Sarah dau of Isaac BRANGAM and his wife born 26 Jan 1810.

The above information suggests that Ann's parents were Isaac Branghan/Brangam and Ann Burchill who were married in 1767 at Ballymodan. They had 2 girls - Dorcah and Ann who were both christened in 1789. Other sources suggest that Ann was born in 1786 but the above entry could still be correct if she was "received" i.e. baptised into the church when she was 3 years old. Sometimes parents used to wait for the birth of a child before they had their previous one baptised simultaneously. A Marmaduke Brangham married Margaret Burchill at Ballymodon in 1810 which indicates that he was probably a brother of Ann Brangan who married a possible relative of his mother's family. I have added the above information to Ann Brangan's line. The list of burials is more baffling. One of the Isaac Branghams is probably Ann's father but which one?

3. I also checked the marriage registers of St Finbarr's Cathedral, Cork for the marriage of Richard and Ann without success. Many of the Church of Ireland records were sent to Dublin for safe keeping during the civil war but were destroyed during a fire at the registry. They include all those for Killaconenagh parish which included Bere Island.

4. A check of the "Surnames of Ireland" by Edward MacLysaght shows that (O) Branigan, Brangan - in Gaelic O Branagain (bran, raven) - A sept (tribe) of the Cenel Eoghain, now found mainly Armagah and Monaghan. Further details are shown in More Irish Families" by the same author.
