1909 19 Apr - Exeter and Plymouth Gazette - MOTORIST CHARGED WITH MANSLAUGHTER
At Chester, on Saturday, a majority of the bench committed for trial William Thomas Joliffe, a gentleman
of means, residing at Mount Alyn,Rossett, Denbighshire, charged with the manslaughter of Emily
Roberts. The prosecution alleged that accused was driving a motor-car through Chester, and it was
declared that, owing to his being under the influence of drink, he had not proper control of the car, which
swerved, and ran down Roberts, inflicting injuries from which she died,.
The defence was that accused was perfectly sober, and that the woman practically jumped out in front of
his car. Previous bail of £10,000 was reduced to £2,000.

1909 05 Jun - Western Times - A Gentleman Charged with Manslaughter
At Chester Assizes yesterday, Mr Wiliam Thomas Joliffe, a gentlem an of independent means, residing
at Mount Alyn, Rossett, near Chester, was indicted for the manslaughter of Mary Emily Roberts, 27. a
cook, on Saturday, April 3rd. Mr. Abel Thomas, K.C., appeared for the prosecution, and Sir Edward
Clark, K.C., for the defence.
The prosecution alleged that while he woman was crossing a road, the defendant, who was driving a
motor-car, swerved to the right, instead of maintaining his course, until he almost touched the kerbstone
on his wrong side. The woman was knocked down, dragged about fifteen yards, and died next day. It
was further alleged that defendant was under the influence of drink and drove at excessve speed.

1909 05 Jun - Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer - MOTOR CAR ACCIDENTS AND LAW COURT SEQUELS - THE
CHESHIRE MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE - At Chester Assizes, yesterday, before Mr. Justice Bucknill,
William Thomas Joliffe, a gentleman of independent means, residing at Mount Alyn, Rossett, Denbigh-
-shire, was indicted for the manslaughter of Mary Emily Roberts, by knocking her down with his motor
car. The court was crowded.
Mr. Abel Thomas, K.C., led for the prosecution, and Sir Edward Clark, K.C., for the defence.
Mr. Abel Thomas, in opening, described the prisoner's car as a powerful Mercedes of 45 h.p., and
fourteen feet long. the accident happened in a broad, open place lit by an arc lamp. The car struck the
deceased and carried her fifteen yards before it was brought to a standstill. She was terribly injured and
died the next morning. Referring to the speed of the car, counsel said that several people were consid- --
-erably frightened at the speed which it was travelling. A policeman cycling in front of the car would tell
the jury that he jumped off and got on to the pavement out of the way.
Prisoner, counsel considered, must have seen deceased and thought he could avoid her. But, unfortun-
-ately, motorists after driving some time, seemed to think they could do anything with their cars and could
escape accident by performing an exceedingly dangerous evolution. It was all very well for the motorists;
it was death for the pedestrian. If that was the way the accident was caused, he should ask the jury to say
that it showed recklessness of the worse kind. If the prisoner was not travelling at a dangerous speed,
why in the world did he not stop before he had gone 15 yards? Witness after witness would say that
prisoner at the time was under the influence of drink.
Witnesses were then called for the prosecution. Mrs. Rose Kelley declared that the prisoner was not
sober. John Oldfield, a butler, and Bessie Lewis, a domestic servant, who witnessed the affair, expressed
that it was an entire accident .
The case for the prosecution had not closed when the court rose.

1909 11 Jun - Lichfield Mercury - At Chester Assizes on Saturday, William Thomas Joliffe, a gentlman of independent
means, of Rossett, was found not guilty of a charge of the manslaughter of May Roberts, at Chester, by
knocking her down while driving a motor-car.
