1861 31 Jul - Derby Mercury, the Derbyshire Summer Assizes Trial of Prisoners -
Uttering Forged Notes. Eli Harrison, 21, Butcher, pleaded not guilty, to a charge of uttering and putting off
certain forged banknotes, with intent to defraud Jonathan Hulley, T. W. Britain, and others. Mr Boden and
Mr Manson appeared for the prosecution on part of the Bank of England; the prisoner was defended by
Mr Jessel. It appeared from Mr Gordon's opening, that on the 27th of May last, the prisoner, who is a
small farmer and drover, in the neighbourhood of Buxton, went to the house of Mr Hulley, who keeps the
Railway Inn, at Doveholes, near Buxton, and asked for refreshments, which was supplied to him by Miss
Hulley. He tended a five pound note, which she changed, and put into a drawer by itself. He was then
quite sober, but he went on drinking until he became quite fresh. About 10 o'clock he got on his horse to
go, and sent a man to get change for another five pound note, which was refused. He then went to a
house between Doveholes and Buxton, where, appearing very drunk, he was put on a sofa; wishing for
more refreshment he tended a five pound note, which after passing from hand to hand came into the
possession of Mr Britain, who detected the forgery and detained the note. Upon being apprehended, the
prisoner made several statements, among which was won to the effect that he had purchased the notes
of a man in the Bull Ring, Birmingham, and had giving him one pound each for them. Martha Hulley,
daughter of the landlord of the Railway Inn, deposed to serving the prisoner with refreshment, and to
giving him change for one note which she put into a draw by itself. She refused to give change for the
second. Prisoner was drunk when he went away, and he sent a man with a second note to be changed.
Witness was in the bar at the time, and the prisoner was on his horse at the door. Jonathan Hulley
recognized the prisoner as the man who passed the note at his house on the 27th of May. He had never
seen him before. Police-Constable Stevenson, stationed at Buxton, went to the Railway Inn on the 27th
of May and received from the last witness a five pound note, which he marked. The note produced is
the same. Samuel Yates, labourer, was walking on the 27th of May from Fairfield to Buxton, and on
passing the Railway Inn saw the prisoner Saul, lifted on to his horse. Witness walked on and the
prisoner overtook him; the prisoner was quite tipsy. Witness went with him to the Bull’s Head where he
was laid on the sofa. Witness went to Buxton and returned about 2 p.m. and found the prisoner more
sober. He called for ale and tended a five pound note, asking Mrs Mycock(the landlady) to change it.
She could not, and gave it to him again. He said he could not go unless he got it changed, and witness
went to Thomas Britain, who said he did not like the look of it. They then went back to the Inn, to get
another note to compare, but failing went to Mr Walton, butcher, who compared it with a note in his
possession and found it to be a forgery. Thomas Britain, grocer, Fairfield, said that he was applied to by
Yates for change for a Bank of England five pound note; and not liking the look of it he went with Mr
Yates to get it compared with one at Mr Walton's. It was not a good one, and I refused to part with it until
I knew more of it. The prisoner said he would take it back where he got it from, but did not seem to
have a clear recollection of where that was, and I would not give it to him. I gave it to police-Constable
Cowlishaw, and am confident that this note is the same. James Walton, butcher, police-constable
Cowlishaw, Eliza Mycock, and George Mycock gave corroborative testimony. William Tregar, inspector
of police at Buxton, went on the 28th of May to Ipstone, in the County of Stafford, to the house of the
prisoner; it is six or 7 miles from Leek. The prisoner is a married man. I got to his house between nine
and 10 o'clock, and found him in bed. He got up, and I charged him with passing the five pound note
at Hulley’s, and attempting to pass one at Mycock’s on the previous day. He said, "If they were bad
ones I took them for good ones.” I told him he must consider himself in custody, and I searched the
house. In his clothes I found five sovereigns, and in a b ox 3 more. I took a horse and rode double with
the prisoner to Leek. We had not gone far when he said, "This is a bad job. I suppose I must suffer for
all. There are two or three parties mixed up in it. I received the notes from the makers." I took him
to Leek lock-up, and the next day to Buxton with a horse and trap, in company with Superintendent
Woolaston. On the way, he said, "I have been drawn into this. For the first time in my life, I went to
Birmingham on Friday last, and near the Bull Ring, I believe, I went to a public-house, and soon
entered into conversation with some parties who were strangers to me. They asked me if I came from
the Peak, and I said I did. They then introduced the notes, which they said were good. I purchased
three for three pounds. I should have gone to Birmingham, tomorrow, and if you will go with me I will
find the parties out for you." T. Woolaston, Superintendent of the Staffordshire police, corroborated the
evidence of the last witness, and added that the prisoner said to him, "When will the old chap be
brought up," meaning his father, who was in custody on a similar charge at Leek. He said, "I should
like to clear him. He knows nothing of it. He had the note from me. I shall tell all the truth about it. I
had the notes from two men and a woman, at Birmingham. One of them asked me if I wanted to ‘buy
any money’, as I could have either ‘paper or hard stuff’. I got three notes for three sovereigns, and if I
got on pretty well I was to go next day to get more."
William Boden proved that the prisoner passed another forged note in payment for some stock at Leek.
James Cundy gave corroborative evidence. The Inspector of Notes to the Bank of England proved the
notes to be forgeries, and all from the same plate. Mr Jessell, on the part of the prisoner, contended
that it was necessary that the prisoner should be shown to have had a guilty knowledge of the badness
of the notes. He commented upon the strange simplicity shown by the prisoner in passing the notes,
which argued anything rather than guilt; and in remarking upon the evidence of the policeman said,
that he had frequently to complain, as in this case, of the way in which those men, extracted evidence
from prisoners in their charge. He concluded an eloquent address by calling a witness who gave the
prisoner a good character. His Lordship summed up the evidence with much minuteness and said
that he quite agreed with Mr Jessell, that policemen who asked questions of prisoners with a view to
extracting statements which might be used against them, were much to blame, but in this case he
considered that the police had acted properly in listening to statements which were volunteered. The
Jury found the prisoner guilty. His Lordship commented on the enormity of this offence against society,
and sentenced him to penal servitude for a term of six years.

1861 01 Aug - The above report is also in the Nottinghamshire Guardian.

1863 30 Jun - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - LOCAL INTELLIGENCE - FATAL ACCIDENT AT
DOVEHOLES, NEAR BUXTON. - FOUR LIVES LOST. -- (From our Correspondent.) -- an inquest was
held on Saturday afternoon, at the Railway Hotel, Doveholes, by Dr Bennett, of Buxton (the lately
appointed Coroner for the Hundred of the High Peak), on the bodies of two women and two children,
who lost their lives on Friday morning last, under most melancholy circumstances. The women were the
wives of "navvies" who are engaged working on the new line of railway now in course of construction
between Blackwell Dale, near Buxton, and New Mills, near Stockport, by the Midland Railway Company.
With their husbands and children, the deceased inhabited one of the limestone huts, partly constructed
underground, and covered over by a earthen clayey roof. The roof of the hut was in a dangerous and
insecure state, and on Friday morning it and it's covering, weighing many tons, came down with a most
tremendous crash, suffocating by the lime two married women (one of whom was a fine-looking healthy
young woman about 25 years of age), and two children. Every possible effort was immediately
rendered by the adjoining neighbours to extricate the unfortunate sufferers, but before they could be got
out two women and two children were found quite dead. Another child was most severely injured,
having its legs broken, and being partly blinded with the lime ashes. The Jury returned a verdict of
"Accidental death,” coupling with it a recommendation to Mr Hulley, the owner, to have the huts
constructed in a more substantial manner.

1863 04 Jul - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - FATAL ACCIDENT AT DOVEHOLES NEAR BUXTON. The
above report plus :- on Sunday, the bodies of the two women and two children, who lost their lives.
Under the above melancholy circumstances, were interred in Fairfield churchyard, in the presence of a
large crowd of people. The Rev. C. Smith, most impressively read the burial service

1863 04 Jul - Grantham Journal - FALL OF A LIME ASH HUT AT DOVE HOLES, NEAR DERBY FOUR PERSONS
KILLED AND ONE INJURED. About ten o’clock on Friday morning last, the roof of a lime ash hut, about
three tons weight, situate at Dove Holes, near Buxton, Derbyshire, fell in , and killed the following
persons, namely; Sara Beeson, aged 26 years; Ann Beeson, her daughter, aged 10; John Beeson, aged
one year and 4 months; and Ann Hampson, married woman, aged 35. An inquest was held on Saturday
last, at the house of Mr. Jonathan Hulley, the Railway Inn, Dove Holes, before Robert Bennet, Esq.,
coroner, and a respectable jury.(etc)
(Evidence of WiIIiam Hampson, husband of Ann Hampson, deceased, inc.) We then removed some
more lime ash and discovered the four dead bodies. The lump that fell on the deceased’s bodies was a
large one. I found all their eyes, ears and mouth full of lime and dust. I assisted to remove them to Mr.
Hulley’s house. I was always told it was safe to live in the hut, and Mr. Hulley jun., the owner, told me to
mind what I was about, and if the roof gave way he would let me have some timber to keep the roof up.
After the coroner had summed up, the jury returned a verdict of “Accidentally killed by a fall of a certain
lime ash hut, in Dove Hole Dale.” The jury also agreed to caution Mr. Hulley, the owner, not to have any
more huts constructed unless slated roofs were put on them.

1863 15 Sep - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - Magisterial Proceedings - BUXTON - SATURDAY. .Before E. W.
WILMOT, R. DOWLING, and J. BARROW, Esqs., and Capt. NIELD. As this was the day for the renewal of
public canvas licence licences, licences were all renewed, a few being cautioned that in case of any
attempt at any renewal of Sunday trading, of which they had been convicted, their licences would next
September be certainly cancelled. Several new applications were made, the first being that of Henry
Potts, of Doveholes, in behalf of whom Mr Ellison appeared, who stated that the present accommodation
at the new station at Doveholes was utterly inadequate to meet popular requirements, and presented a
memorial in his favour, signed by most of the respectable farmers and employers of labour in the
neighbourhood.... Mr Jonathan Hulley, of the same place, and for whom Mr Johnson appeared, also
applied for a licence.... After a protracted investigation into the merits of the respective applicants, the
Bench at length decided in favour of Mr Hulley.

1841 27 Jan - died in accident at Doveholes -see newspaper report below.

1841 30 Jan - The Manchester Guardian: SHOCKING CATASTROPHE - Account of accident at Doveholes to 7 year old
son of Mr Hulley who keeps the New Inn at Doveholes.

1841 04 Feb - Freeman’s Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser - Dreadful Accident. On Wednesday, a most awful
event took place at Doveholes, about midway between Chapel-en-le-Frith and Buxton. The day was
extremely cold, and two youths, one named Yates, about 13 years old, son of a farmer in the parish of
Chapel-en-le-Frith, and the other named Hully, about seven years of age, and son of an innkeeper and
farmer at Doveholes aforesaid, together with a man, walked on the top of a limekiln for the purpose of
warming themselves, when the stone on which they were stood, which was piled up and in the act of
being burned into lime, suddenly sunk, and the two boys were instantly closed up in the fiery vortex, far
beyond the possibility of human aid or assistance. The man with great difficulty extracted himself from
his perilous situation without sustaining any material injury; but the poor unfortunate boys were almost
consumed to ashes, before any portion of their limbs could be recovered.

1841 05 Feb - Chester Chronicle - SHOCKING CATASTROPHE. On the afternoon of Wednesday se'night, the small
village of Dove Holes, situate about midway between Buxton and Chapel-en-le-Frith, was in a moment
thrown in to indescribable distress, on account of two boys having sunk into the burning lime kiln at that
place. It appears that the two boys had gone to the kiln to make some play time, as was usual for boys
about there to do, it being the hour that most of the hands employed were gone to dinner, there being but
one or two men attendant at the kiln, who at that time were at their employment. The younger of the
unfortunate sufferers, aged seven years, was the child of Mr. Hulley, who keeps the New Inn, at the
village, and the elder, whose name was Yates, fourteen years of age, and whose friends also were
publicans of that place. The lads not content with amusing themselves about the kiln, proceeded to
walk on or across the middle, but on approaching the centre, the burning materials gave way, and sunk to
a depth of several feet, taking the boys along therewith.
Their awful situation being immediately observed by the men at work, an alarm was given, and prompt
assistance rendered. Yates, the elder boy, was soon got out, he was much burned, but apparently died
of suffocation. Hulley, the younger, however, who had sunk much lower, was covered in the burning
lime, and some time elapsed before he could be found. He was burned in a dreadful state, and the body
would have been wholly consumed in a very short period, had he not been brought out. Both arms and
one leg were burned off, and left in the kiln.
The man who went down to the release of the unhappy beings and remove the burning materials, had
great difficulty to avoid falling a prey to suffocation. It is a regular practice with men employed at lime
kilns to walk about on the top and over; to proceed with a barrowful of stone or coal even to the centre
where the kiln requires filling up; but the stability of the sublayers is calculated upon the quantity of the
lime which had been taken out of the bottom of the kiln in a given time. This unexampled falling in of
the kin which had occasioned the loss of two lives, is accounted for by the thaw which took place the
previous Saturday and the following day, and which with the melted snow had caused a considerable
quantity of water to get into the kiln, whereby much of the lime round the sides had become slacked as it
were, and much reduced in bulk, whilst the super layers of burning stone and coals had not sufficiently
settled to make up the usual firmness and solidity, until the unfortunate moment alluded to. Nor does it
appear that the workmen were apprised of any danger likely to happen in consequence. The kiln in
question is near the turnpike road, but on the contrary side of the village, and has not been long worked,
being nearly new.
An inquest was taken upon the case before the Coroner of the district, on Friday last, when the evidence
was heard, and the men who were employed, were admonished to be careful about letting experienced
boys endangering their lives about the works. The jury returned their verdict accordingly.

1861 31 Jul - Derby Mercury, the Derbyshire Summer Assizes Trial of Prisoners - Uttering Forged Notes. Eli Harrison,
21, Butcher, pleaded not guilty, to a charge of uttering and putting off certain forged banknotes, with
intent to defraud Jonathan Hulley, T. W. Britain, and others. Mr Boden and Mr Manson appeared for the
prosecution on part of the Bank of England; the prisoner was defended by Mr Jessel. It appeared from
Mr Gordon's opening, that on the 27th of May last, the prisoner, who is a small farmer and drover, in the
neighbourhood of Buxton, went to the house of Mr Hulley, who keeps the Railway Inn, at Doveholes,
near Buxton, and asked for refreshments, which was supplied to him by Miss Hulley. He tended a five
pound note, which she changed, and put into a drawer by itself. He was then quite sober, but he went on
drinking until he became quite fresh. About 10 o'clock he got on his horse to go, and sent a man to get
change for another five pound note, which was refused. He then went to a house between Doveholes
and Buxton, where, appearing very drunk, he was put on a sofa; wishing for more refreshment he tended
a five pound note, which after passing from hand to hand came into the possession of Mr Britain, who
detected the forgery and detained the note. Upon being apprehended, the prisoner made several
statements, among which was won to the effect that he had purchased the notes of a man in the Bull
Ring, Birmingham, and had giving him one pound each for them. Martha Hulley, daughter of the
landlord of the Railway Inn, deposed to serving the prisoner with refreshment, and to giving him
change for one note which she put into a draw by itself. She refused to give change for the second.
Prisoner was drunk when he went away, and he sent a man with a second note to be changed.
Witness was in the bar at the time, and the prisoner was on his horse at the door. Jonathan Hulley
recognized the prisoner as the man who passed the note at his house on the 27th of May. He had
never seen him before. Police-Constable
Stevenson, stationed at Buxton, went to the Railway Inn on the 27th of May and received from the last
witness a five pound note, which he marked. The note produced is the same. Samuel Yates, labourer,
was walking on the 27th of May from Fairfield to Buxton, and on passing the Railway Inn saw the
prisoner Saul, lifted on to his horse. Witness walked on and the prisoner overtook him; the prisoner was
quite tipsy. Witness went with him to the Bull’s Head where he was laid on the sofa. Witness went to
Buxton and returned about 2 p.m. and found the prisoner more sober. He called for ale and tended a
five pound note, asking Mrs Mycock(the landlady) to change it. She could not, and gave it to him again.
He said he could not go unless he got it changed, and witness went to Thomas Britain, who said he did
not like the look of it. They then went back to the Inn, to get another note to compare, but failing went to
Mr Walton, butcher, who compared it with a note in his possession and found it to be a forgery. Thomas
Britain, grocer, Fairfield, said that he was applied to by Yates for change for a Bank of England five pound
note; and not liking the look of it he went with Mr Yates to get it compared with one at Mr Walton's. It was
not a good one, and I refused to part with it until I knew more of it. The prisoner said he would take it
back where he got it from, but did not seem to have a clear recollection of where that was, and I would
not give it to him. I gave it to police-Constable Cowlishaw, and am confident that this note is the same.
James Walton, butcher, police-constable Cowlishaw, Eliza Mycock, and George Mycock gave
corroborative testimony. William Tregar, inspector of police at Buxton, went on the 28th of May to
Ipstone, in the County of Stafford, to the house of the prisoner; it is six or 7 miles from Leek. The
prisoner is a married man. I got to his house between nine and 10 o'clock, and found him in bed. He
got up, and I charged him with passing the five pound note at Hulley’s, and attempting to pass one at
Mycock’s on the previous day. He said, "If they were bad ones I took them for good ones.” I told him he
must consider himself in custody, and I searched the house. In his clothes I found five sovereigns, and
in a box 3 more. I took a horse and rode double with the prisoner to Leek. We had not gone far when
he said, "This is a bad job. I suppose I must suffer for all. There are two or three parties mixed up in it.
I received the notes from the makers." I took him to Leek lock-up, and the next day to Buxton with a
horse and trap, in company with Superintendent Woolaston. On the way, he said, "I have been drawn
into this. For the first time in my life, I went to Birmingham on Friday last, and near the Bull Ring,
I believe, I went to a public-house, and soon entered into conversation with some parties who were
strangers to me. They asked me if I came from the Peak, and I said I did. They then introduced the notes,
which they said were good. I purchased three for three pounds. I should have gone to Birmingham,
tomorrow, and if you will go with me I will find the parties out for you." T. Woolaston, Superintendent of
the Staffordshire police, corroborated the evidence of the last witness, and added that the prisoner said
to him, "When will the old chap be brought up," meaning his father, who was in custody on a similar
charge at Leek. He said, "I should like to clear him. He knows nothing of it. He had the note from me. I
shall tell all the truth about it. I had the notes from two men and a woman, at Birmingham. One of them
asked me if I wanted to ‘buy any money’, as I could have either ‘paper or hard stuff’. I got three notes for
three sovereigns, and if I got on pretty well I was to go next day to get more."
William Boden proved that the prisoner passed another forged note in payment for some stock at Leek.
James Cundy gave corroborative evidence. The Inspector of Notes to the Bank of England proved the
notes to be forgeries, and all from the same plate. Mr Jessell, on the part of the prisoner, contended that
it was necessary that the prisoner should be shown to have had a guilty knowledge of the badness of the
notes. He commented upon the strange simplicity shown by the prisoner in passing the notes, which
argued anything rather than guilt; and in remarking upon the evidence of the policeman said, that he
had frequently to complain, as in this case, of the way in which those men, extracted evidence from
prisoners in their charge.

1911 11 Apr - The Manchester Guardian: AN ACCIDENT IN DERBYSHIRE. - An inquest was held in Manchester
yesterday on William. Hulley, aged 60 years, of Dove Holes Dale, near Buxton. He was a labourer at
some asphalting works at Dove Holes Dale. On April 4. he was helping his foreman to run waggons
into a shed at the works. Near by, on the decline, was a waggon, which the foreman said he had
“scotched,” but soon .afterwards this bumped into another waggon lower down the line. He saw Hulley
standing in the footway holding his arm which he said the waggon had caught and injured. He was
brought to Manchester Royal Infirmary, where he died.
The foreman said he was certain the waggon was “scotched” when he left it. The jury, in returning a
verdict of accidental death, thought the pin which held the brake on the waggon was not properly
secured.

yesterday on William.
The jury, in returning a
verdict of accidental death, thought the pin which held the brake on the waggon was not properly
secured.

1912 - Will index entry: Hulley William of Dove Dales Derbyshire died 6 April 1911 at the Infirmary Manchester
Probate London 8 January to Francis Herbert Aloysius Hulley tailor Effects £288 2s.
