1899 30 May - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - SAD DEATH OF A BASLOW WOMAN.
An inquest was held yesterday, at Bakewell Workhouse, by Mr. Sidney Taylor (deputy coroner) on the
body of Elizabeth Hulley, aged 67years, of Baslow. The woman was taken to the workhouse on Friday,
and died the next morning.
William Bennett, relieving officer, said she was in a wretched state and he removed her to the work -
-house. She had been in receipt of medical relief. On the way to the workhouse she complained of
feeling ill. She looked as if she had not been washed for months. Dr. Evans saw the woman shortly
after her admission, and she was in a feeble state. She was extremely dirty. He ordered stimulants;
and that she be put to bed.
He made a post-mortem examination on Sunday, and found both ears were bruised externally. The
bruises might have been caused by a blow or a fall. He thought death was due to Bright’s disease of
the kidneys. The Coroner said he ordered a post-mortem examination, because it was a case which
ought to be carefully investigated as there were rumours that the woman had been ill-treated.
The jury returned a verdict of “Death from natural causes,” and recommended that in future medical
men who had attended patients sent to the workhouse should furnish reports to the workhouse medical
officer.

1899 03 Jun - Derbyshire Times and Chesterfield Herald - A BASLOW WOMAN’S SHOCKING END.
“Not Washed for Months,” Important Recommendation by the Jury.
Details showing the miserable conditions under which some people live - even in a beautiful Derbyshire
village - were forthcoming on Monday at the inquest held by Mr. Sydney Taylor (deputy coroner), in the
Board Room of Bakewell Workhouse, on the body of Elizabeth Hulley, of Baslow. The woman was
found in a pitiable state by the Relieving Officer (Mr. Bennett) at her home on Friday last, and he
promptly secured proper attention for her by removal to the Workhouse. She, however, succumbed on
Saturday morning.
Mr. A. Hawes, clerk to the Bakewell Board of Guardians, and Sergeant Payne were present at the
inquiry. The foreman of the jury was Mr. C. Critchlow.
Aaron Hulley, woodman, of Baslow, identified the body as that of his sister, Elizabeth Hulley, who was
67 years of age, and of no occupations. She lived with her brother, Henry Hulley, at Baslow. He saw her
last alive a week since last Saturday. He was not on very good terms with is brother. He could tell she
was not well, but did not know if a doctor was attending her.
William Bennett, one of the relieving officers under the Board of Guardians, said he had known deceased
for several years, and she had always been ailing. She had been in receipt of medical relief, but Dr.
Wrench had not seen her recently. On Friday, May 26th, he visited the house and found deceased sitting
by the fire in a most wretched state. She was as black as a sweep, and he told her he would be comp-
- elled to remove her to the workhouse. She seemed very poorly. He telephoned from the Rutland Arms
Hotel for Dr. Wrench to come and see her, but he was away from home. He brought the woman to the
workhouse in a conveyance. Dr. Wrench did not report on the case at the time the woman was moved.
She did not say her brother had not treated her well. He read that remark made in Baslow, but did not
ask deceased any direct questions on the subject.
By the Jury: She looked as if he had not been washed for months.
Sarah Ann Wright, nurse at the Bakewell Workhouse, said the deceased was in a most filthy state when
admitted and very ill. Dr. Evans arrived shortly after the woman came in and examined her. She died
about 8 o’clock on Saturday morning. Witness was with her the whole of the night. There was not a day
and night nurse, but witness had an assistant.
Charles Walter Evans, medical practitioner, of Bakewell, and medical officer to the Workhouse, said he
saw the deceased soon after her admission. She was in a very feeble state and he could hardly feel her
pulse. He could not form an opinion as to what she was suffering from. He made a post-mortem on
Sunday, and found both her ears were bruised externally. The marks might have been caused by fall or
blow.
There were no other marks on the body except for old marks. There was extensive disease of the kid-
-neys. The injuries about the ears would have little effect on life, however they were caused.
The Coroner: You remember, perhaps, some time ago a jury recommended that when cases were
brought in from outside they should be accompanied by a report from the medical man , if possible? I
am told that there has been no report by Dr. Wrench in this case; but has it been the custom?
Dr. Evans: Not just lately. Sometimes we don’t get a report. It is a great help if we can get a report when a
case is sent in.
The Coroner: That is just what the jury thought, but it is not always done.
Dr. Evans: No; it is a great help when it is done.
Mr. Bowman (to Dr. Evans): If the woman was admitted in such a weak state, didn’t you think it necessary
to see her a second time?
Dr. Evans: I should have done if I had been sent for . She was left in the hands of the nurse. She was
almost a dying woman, and not to be mauled about unnecessarily unless there was some hope of doing
something for her.
Mr. Callow (one of the jury) thought the brother of the deceased ought to be present, as he would have
been a most material witness.
The Coroner said it was case he thought ought to be investigated carefully, because there were rumours
that the woman had been ill-treated by her brother, and that was why he ordered a post-mortem,. But
after having heard what Dr. Evans said - that the cause of death was Bright’s disease, and, further, that
the marks she had could not be connected with the death, it seemed to him that the jury must return a
verdict according to that evidence.
The jury returned a verdict of “Death from natural causes,” and recommended that in all cases in future
brought to the Workhouse, the medical man who had been in attendance should send reports to the
Workhouse Medical Officer on those cases. Mr. Hawes promised to convey the recommendations of the
jury to the Board of Guardians.

1857 Oct 07 - The Derby Mercury Bakewell Petty Sessions October 2. (Before W. Longsdon and R. W. M. Nesfield
Esqs.) Charge of Stealing Nuts -- William Hulley charged Robert How with having stolen nuts at Great
Longstone. It appeared the wrong person had been summoned, as the brother of the present defendant
was the person meant.
The case of course could not be proceeded with; but a magistrate remarked he had no doubt it was a
dodge between the two boys to send the wrong one, but as the wrong one had been summoned,
complainant must pay him a shilling for his time and summons the right one.

1857 Oct 16 - The Derby Mercury Bakewell Petty Sessions October 2. (Before W. Longsdon and R. W. M Nesfield Esqs.
and Sir J. Paxton) Charge of Stealing Nuts -- William Hulley charged Michael How with having stolen
nuts at Netherwood on the 19th of September. This was an adjourned case, defendants in other having
been previously summoned by mistake. The case to-day turned out to be a new breach of trust with
which the Bench could not entertain, and the case was dismissed, Hulley being told he might prosecute
defendant at Derby.

1859 Sep 10 - Leeds Mercury Serious and Fatal Colliery Accident at Mosbro’, near Sheffield
Four lives lost, and several seriously injured.
An alarming colliery accident took place yesterday afternoon at the Silkstone Main
Colliery, Mosbro Moor, the property of Messrs Swallow. About three o'clock, an
immense amount of smoke was discovered issuing out of the drawing or up-cast
shaft; this was an indication that a fire had broken out in the pit, and we may observe
that there is a steam engine in the pit for the purpose of securing ventilation. From
the furnace of the engine there was a flue communicating with the shaft. This flue
had become over-heated and fired the coal through which it passed. There were
from 30 to 40 hands in the pit, principally lads, and before they had time to collect at
the bottom of the pit, the shaft had become full of smoke and rendered useless as a
means of exit. The only means of safety, therefore, was by a downcast or pumping
shaft, a depth of 160 yards, and the passage was very limited, in consequence of
the piping and gear of the pumps. A "gin" and pulley was therefore at once put into
execution, and volunteers sent down to search the men confined below. The first
was brought to the surface at about six o'clock, and from the information that could
then be gathered, it seemed that immediately after the accident occurred the miners
rushed to the bottom of the up-cast shaft, expecting to get into the chairs, and at
once be brought to the top, but finding the shaft and the neighbourhood of the engine
on fire, they pursued their away up a heading or drift to the other shaft, and there
waited for assistance from above.
In the meantime, a man named James Travis, had been placed on a stage 40 yards
from the surface to render assistance as the case required, and about 60 yards lower
down another man named John Blackburn was stationed for a similar purpose. Up to
10 o'clock, the draught and ventilation did not permit of such active exertions as the
men were desirous of making; but the wind suddenly changing a proper course of
ventilation was established, and the volunteers had a better opportunity of carrying
on their work.
At 10.30 about 14 or 16 have been rescued, the principal colliers who had assisted in
their deliverance being ….. Berresford and Ellis Hulley, the former of whom had
rescued not less than six. In consequence of the narrowness of the shaft, instead of
an ordinary chair being employed it was found necessary to use what is technically
termed a “horse," a plain seat, the men, securing themselves to it by means of a
strap, and in order to facilitate their operations two of these "horses" were at first
used instead of one. The plan required very great caution, but not withstanding every
attention to this point, a distressing circumstance occurred, which resulted fatally. A
lad named Kirkby was being taken up, and when he had reached the station where
Blackburn was placed with two lanterns, he thought he had arrived at the top, and
endeavouring to disengage himself, and in so doing, fell to the bottom of the shaft, a
distance of about 60 feet. His screams, which were heard by those in the pit, were
described as heartrending; as no more was heard of him after the fall, the conclusion
is that he was killed upon the spot.
At about a quarter to 12, immediately after Hulley had brought up two youths, and
was preparing to descend again, an explosion occurred in the workings below, the
effect of which was most alarming in the shaft where the men were congregated, and
also at the surface. For a time, all hopes of rescuing the hands remaining in the pit
were given up. In a short time the shaft cleared a little, and the “horse” was sent
down for the man Travis at the first stage, and he came up in safety. Travis could
give no account of the others lower down the pit, and the “horse” was again lowered,
the crowd at the top breathlessly waiting the result, and fearing that all below had
perished. The “horse” was allowed gradually to descend, and when it arrived at
Blackburn’s stage the signal announced that he was safe, and shortly after he was
brought to the top in an exhausted condition. After being partly restored, he stated
that immediately after the explosion he could hear some of the men shouting below,
and that he believed they were all safe. The explosion extinguished his lights for a
few seconds, but on the shaft clearing they came in again.
Not withstanding the favourable report given by Blackburn, it was still considered not
safe to send anyone down, and the "horse" was therefore again lowered empty, and
fortunately most of the men at the bottom were able to attach themselves to it; but the
work of drawing them up was one of great difficulty, and required extreme caution, as
the explosion had destroyed the signal apparatus is, and the ropes of which were
liable to become entangled with the "horse", and also from other obstructions which
presented themselves at different points in the shaft.
The last man brought up before our reporter left (making 26 or 27) was named
Glassby. This was a little after one o'clock this morning. He stated that two men are
still in the pit, but in consequence of being so severely burnt by the explosion they
were unable to come up without assistance, and he also added that two youths, one
the lad Kirkby, and another named Henry Stephenson, who was supposed to have
been knocked off one of the stages, either by Kirby in his fall, or by some of the
debris, were both dead, but he was not aware whether any other than those he had
named remained in the mine.- Sheffield Telegraph, yesterday.
Our Sheffield correspondent, writing last night, gives the number of deaths at four.
Referring to the death of the boy Kirkby, he says:-"He was found lying at the bottom
of the shaft, quite dead, and along with him was a boy, named Hugh Bird, was also
dead, having, it is supposed, been killed by Kirkby falling upon him. The bodies of
Kirkby and Bird, were drawn up at a later hour, and placed in a club-room at the
house of Mr George Bruce, the British Oak public-house. Before this was done,
several men went down at short intervals to search for William Meggitt and Henry
Stephenson, two boys still missing, but owing to the spread of the flames the man
could not proceed above a few yards, and nothing could be seen of them. They are
supposed to have perished of cold and exhaustion before they could be recovered.
A very painful incident occurred in connection with the former of them. The lad
implored his father to bring him out with him at an earlier period of the evening, but
the latter, either from not at first recognising his voice, or considering himself
sufficiently burdened with another boy he was bringing with him, did not do so, and
the poor fellow perished."

1859 10 Sep - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - COLLIERY ACCIDENT NEAR
MOSBROUGH FOUR LIVES LOST. Similar account as above Including:
The occurrence, as might be expected, attracted a large concourse of people, and
among the rest Mr Wells, the owner of the Eckington and other pits, Mr Seymour,
manager for Mr Barrow, of Staveley Works, Frith Berrisford and Ellis Hulley,
workmen at Mr. Wells’ pits, and others. All these persons exerted themselves in a
most praiseworthy manner for the rescue of the sufferers, Mr Wells being particularly
conspicuous. Messrs Swallow and Mr Sissons were also very energetic. James
Travis and John Blackburn were the first men who occupied the dangerous stations
down the shaft. Among those who most exerted themselves in going down on the
horse, and bringing up men were Berresford and Hulley. Mr Jones and Mr Harwood,
of Eckington, surgeons, were in attendance to administer any relief that might be
required by the men.
The pit is believed to be extensively on fire, and it is expected that it will have to be
filled with water to extinguish the fire.

1859 18 Sep - Derby Mercury - Terrible Coalpit Catastrophe - similar report as above.

1859 19 Nov - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - THE MOSBRO’ MOOR COLLIERY
ACCIDENT. On Thursday, Frith Berresford, Ellis Ulley, and the other men who
descended the shaft of Messrs. Swallow’s pit at Mosbro’ on the night of the accident,
some time ago, for the purpose of rescuing the unfortunate workmen, were presented
with the proceeds of a subscription which had been made for them, amounting to
£15. 17s. The presentation was made by the Rev. E.B. Estcourt, the Vicar of
Eckington, who complimented them on the courage they had displayed.

Many thanks for your recent emails, they have been most timely. I am hoping to come
up to Derbyshire in the autumn, for a holiday with my wife, and had planned to visit the
Records Office at Matlock, to look at some of the church registers there.
I have, however, been able to establish a link between my research into the Hulley line
within the Green family and your family trees, as published on the web.
One of my forebears was William Hulley, born 1838 in Calver, to John Hulley (farmer)
and his wife Sarah. I had traced John & Sarah to Stony Middleton in the 1841 census,
and have now been able to identify my John Hulley as the person identified as a
descendant (#50) of George Hulley.
I have a significant amount of information about William - he joined the army and
served in the Indian Mutiny; wrote copious amounts of poetry; and married in Sheffield
1865. I also have details of the (supposed) inscription on Sarah Hulley's gravestone in
Stony Middleton churchyard (she died 22.01.1860), which I also plan to look forward
when in the area.
If you would like any of this information, please let me know.
Again, many thanks. I will keep you posted with the results of my research in
Derbyshire in the autumn.
Kind Regards,
Michael Green
