1863 01 Jul - Liverpool Daily Post -ALLEGED BREACH OF CONTRACT - SLATER’S LANCASHIRE DIRECTORY -
A number of Liverpool tradesmen, including Messrs. Matthew Wilson, ironmonger, 27, Whitechapel; John
Walton Eaglesfield, draper and outfitter, 29 Whitechapel; Charles Cooper, eating-house keeper; James
Moore, and George Tool, of Whitechapel, were summoned for the sum of £1 16s each, being the amount of the subscription for Slater’s Lancashire Directory, for 1861. The defendants all admitted giving
the order, but stated that although the plaintiffs, Messrs. Slater, of Manchester, the publishers of the
directory, entered into a contract to deliver the book in January or February of the year 1861, it was not
delivered until July, when it was of no use, more than half of the year having expired. The defendants,
Wilson and Cooper, refused to receive the book, and returned it to the plaintiffs, but the other three
neglected to do so.
Mr. Hulley, the plaintiffs’ representative from Manchester, denied having undertaken to supply the directory
in January or February. His Honour, in giving his decision, said he could not disbelieve the testimony of
the defendants, who all agreed that the directory was to be delivered in January or February. He gave a
verdict in favour of the defendants Wilson and Cooper, who had returned the book, but in the case of the
other defendants, who had not done so, the verdict must be for the plaintiffs.
On the application of Mr. Gray, who appeared for Wilson and Cooper, his Honour granted their costs. Mr.
Hulley made a similar application on behalf of the plaintiffs, in the other cases, which his Honour refused.

account, either for the above-mentioned Edition (now in the press), or any other Directory published by

1887 Oct 5 - Birmingham Daily Post - Charge of false pretences - William Francis Perkins, of no fixed trade or address,
was charged on remand with obtaining from Nellie Southworth, tobacconist, 6, Witton Road, Aston, on
September 20, the sum of 6d. by means of false pretences: and further with obtaining a like sum from
Sarah Whitworth, provision dealer, of 59, Alma Street, on September 21. On the dates mentioned
prisoner called at two shops, and on the representation that he was canvassing for the "Birmingham
Directory." he obtained 6d. from both Mrs Southworth and Mrs Whitworth, on the understanding that the
advertisements would appear in that publication. Mr John Hulley, the publisher and proprietor of "Hulley's
Directory of Birmingham" and Arthur E. Kay, a clerk in the employ of Messrs, Kelley, directory publishers
of Birmingham and London, stated that the prisoner had no authority to canvass on their behalf, Mr Hulley
adding that they were only two Birmingham directories published.
Police-constable Raven, who was on duty in plain clothes in company with Police-constable Malins,
arrested the prisoner in New Street, Aston. He declined to give his address, but informed the officer that
he was authorised to collect advertisements on behalf of the "publishers of the Birmingham directory in
Broad Street." Prisoner, who had been previously before the courts at West Bromwich and Solihull on
similar charges, was committed for trial at the Quarter Sessions on both charges.

1889 Sep 14 - Birmingham Daily Post - Revision Courts Birmingham (for voting-lists) incl. Mr Barton had given notice
of his intention to object to the claim of Mr Hulley, the publisher of the "Birmingham Directory," in respect
of an occupancy at Victoria Buildings. Mr Hulley attended to substantiate the claim, and it was allowed,
but his expenses were disallowed, in as much as the objection seemed reasonable in view of the fact
that there was no name on his door.
