1988 13 May - letter (A095) from Mr. I Haynes 18 Nook Lane Ashton under Lyne OL6 9HL:
Dear Mr Hulley
With reference to an item which appeared recently in the 'Ashton Reporter' regarding the Hulley
family, during my researches into the history of the local cotton industry I came across several
references to one James Hulley. He was described as a 'cotton manufacturer' in July 1793, as a 'cotton
manufacturer, dealer and chapman', bankrupt, in February 1794 and in December 1798 there appeared
a notice to his creditors to meet his assignees. James Hulley was always 'of Hurst Brook' which was =
then a small settlement about 3/4 mile from the town of Ashton. It seems highly likely that James
occupied a mill at Hurst Brook owned by Aaron Ogden which was established about 1789. In July 1803
the entire stock-in-trade was advertised to be sold at the factory and most of the machinery was still for
sale in August 1807. It is intereesting to note that a small street known as 'Hulley Street' existed at Hurst
Brook until the mass demolition of the 1960s.
I hope that this information is of some interest to you and wish you luck with your research.
Yours faithfully
I Haynes

1790 21 Nov - ?married John Taylor at St Michael's church Ashton under Lyne: John Taylor and Mary
Hulley of this p.

2008 15 Feb - note from Deloris re the possibility of Mary Hulley daughter of John and Anne of Luzley
End was the Mary Hulley who married John Taylor as shown above:

"Knowing that it was not Mary that was buried in 1778, I am going to take my chances
and suggest that Mary daughter of John and Ann Mallilieu was the one who married
John Taylor the 21 Nov 1790. She is 6 years younger than Elizabeth and Elizabeth
married in 1785, so this fits right in to the puzzle."

I support this contention in the absence of other evidence.

2010 14 Jan - the discovery of the above IGI information re the baptism and death of Mary Hully has
eliminated the possiblity of her marrying John Taylor in 1790.

David Shaw

Extract from A history of the family of William Shaw (Papa)

The Shaw Beginnings The Shaw name is a known and well-respected name across the world especially in the Southern Illinois area. Allen Shaw (1817-1898) James Shaw (born 1788) Frank Shaw (1861-1920)

The Shaw Beginnings

The Shaw name is a known and well-respected name across the world, especially in the Southern Illinois and Indiana areas along with a number of places in England, Scotland, and Ireland. It is in the top 100 most popular names in England and Scotland and is a fairly popular one here in Amreica. The first Shaws were from a town named Hopkins in northwest England. Hopkins no longer exists today but instead it is a portion of the city of Blackpool. The first known Shaw in my lineage is David Shaw who married a Grace Hulley. They lived in Hopkins, Lancashire, England during the mid to late 18th century. They had two children together. Their first was James Shaw who was born in Hopkins, England in 1788. His baptism record is how we know the names of his parents. James Shaw is my great great great great grandfather and was the Shaw who brought our Shaws into America. David Shaw and Grace Hulley also had a daughter named Elkanah who was born in 1798. James Shaw married Sarah Ashley around 1810 in Hopkins, England. Sarah was born in England as well but it is not known where; Her birth year is 1786. Together they had 7 children, David (1810), Elkanah (1812), Hannah (1813), Sarah (1816), Mary (1823), Ann (1830), and Allen Shaw born September 9, 1817 in Hopkins. Allen Shaw was my great great great grandfather. James Shaw’s occupation in England was being a weaver.
By 1832, James Shaw and his entire family decided to come to America to start a new life. They departed from their homeland from the port of Liverpool, England. They came across the Atlantic aboard a ship named the "S.S. Arab" captained by a Mr. John Ball. They arrived in Philadelphia on July 11, 1832. Along with the Shaw family of 9, 51 other passengers came to America onboard the S.S. Arab. One of these passengers was George Jackson. Mr. Jackson was a grandson of David Shaw and son of James’ sister, Elkanah. He would marry James’ daughter, Hannah, and would spend the rest of his life amongst the Shaw family. After arriving in America, the Shaws became a pioneer family and crossed the Appalachian Mountains and settled in southern Indiana. The place they settled is called Posey County, Indiana and most of the Shaws lived in Mt. Vernon in Posey. The Shaw family would remain in these parts for a long time and played a prominent role in the region’s history. It's unknown exactly when the Shaws first arrived in Posey. The first record of the Shaws in Indiana comes from a marriage record between Allen Shaw and a Katherine, nicknamed “Kit“, Winemiller on October 9,1843. The first Indiana census with the Shaw family came out in 1850. James Shaw was a farmer and lived with his wife, Sarah, his 20 year-old daughter Ann, and 38 year-old daughter Elkanah who was a weaver, probably taught by her father. This 1850 census is the last record of James Shaw in America.
According to the census, Allen Shaw and his wife Katherine had 2 children named Sarah (1849) and Julia (1847) and lived in a separate house from James. Allen Shaw made his living as a farmer. Katherine was born on April 27, 1825 in Posey County. Her parents' names were James Winemiller of Pennsylvania and Francis, nicknamed Fannie, Skivers of either Virginia or North Carolina; both were pioneers of Indiana. Interestingly, Fannie’s father was named Christopher Skivers and her mother was a Shawnee Native American, however her name is unknown to me. Fannie’s mother is the only known non-white blood in the Shaw family. Katherine’s family is an American bloodline and her ancestors had been in America for many generations (see Katherine Winemiller family tree). By 1860, Allen and Kit had a good amount of money. Their personal real estate was worth $1600 in 1860 money and also $300 of personal property. By 1860, Allen and Kit had 5 children, William, David, Hannah, Julia, and Lafayette. Sarah Shaw who was born in 1849 isn't in this Census and I think she may have died sometime between 1850 and 1860, but that is just an assumption. By 1870, the Shaw family wealth had increased a tremendous amount. They went from having $1600 worth of real estate in 1850 to having $6000 worth of real estate in 1870. They also had an additional $800 of personal property. By 1870, Kit and Allen had had all their kids. Living with them were William, David, Hannah, Lafayette, Frances, Parthena, and Frank, my great great grandfather who was born on January 2, 1861. Julia married and moved out of the house by this time, she was 23. In 1870, the Shaw family lived next door to the Bauer family. The head of the Bauer household was Francis Joseph Bauer, a French immigrant from Neuville, France and his wife Eliza Jane (Koonce) Bauer who was born in Rutherford, Tennessee. Eliza’s family, like Katherine’s, had been in America for a long time. Her father’s name was George Small Koonce and was also born in Rutherford and her mother’s name was Nancy Hays and was from Jefferson, Tennessee (see Eliza Koonce family tree). One of their daughters, Harriet born on May 24, 1869 in Posey, would be the future wife of Frank Shaw. In 1880, Allen and Kit were still living in Posey with 4 of their children, including Frank who was 19 at the time.
On, November 25, 1888, Frank Shaw married his once next door neighbor, Harriet Bauer. It’s unknown to me where Frank and Harriet lived from 1888 to 1900 but I believe it was in Posey County. On , February 8, 1898 the tough pioneer, Allen Shaw died of dysentery in Posey County. His wife, Katherine would never remarry and would die on January 10, 1909 in Sullivan County, Indiana. In 1900, Frank Shaw and his wife Harriet were living in a Southern Illinois town near Carbondale named Eldorado in Saline County. Frank Shaw was a farmer. They had three children at this time, George (1892), Lafayette (1894) who was named after his uncle, and Gracie (1896). George was the only 1 of them attending school which he had been doing for 2 years. Unfortunately, Frank and Harriet’s first child, Hobart, died after only living for 7 days. Their 5th child (after Gracie) who was named Charles Emil also died after only a month and a half. This must have devastated the Shaw family and may have even led to Frank’s future depression. By 1910, Frank and Harriet had had all their children. They now had 6 in all. From oldest to youngest: George, Lafayette, Gracie, Ethel, Katie, Lloyd, and Clara. Lloyd was my great grandfather and he was born on October 9, 1906 in Eldorado, Illinois. By this time, George, Frank’s oldest son was 18 and started his profession as a farm worker. Things began to change for Frank during the next decade. Sometime between 1910 and 1920 Frank Shaw stopped his farming possession and became exclusively a stock broker. He made some very smart decisions and became much wealthier. However, this wealth did not keep coming. Frank became an addicted gambler and an alcoholic; he was a very depressed man. He made some very stupid decisions in the stock market and lost a lot of his family’s money. On February 16, 1920 while thought to be intoxicated with alcohol, Frank Shaw committed suicide by jumping into a well. This was the official cause of death on his death report. It is unknown what exactly happened in the last moments of Frank’s life, but it is possible that Frank Shaw did not jump in the well but was pushed and murdered by a son or another family member who was angry about Frank losing the money. The coroner still kept the cause of death as suicide and it still is to this day and no case has ever been made to find out if someone killed Frank. Harriet (Bauer) Shaw lived out the rest of her life in Eldorado and died a widow in the closing months of World War 2 on May 10, 1945.
On ???, Lloyd Shaw married Cecelia Eva Sminchak. Cecelia was the daughter of Czechoslovakian immigrants. Her father was John Sminchak who was born in Uloza, Czechoslovakia and came to America in 1891 and her mother was Elona Lenger who was born in Zamutov, Czechoslovakia and came to America in 1900. She adopted Helen as her name in America instead of Elona. John Sminchak was a coal miner in the western/southern Illinois town, Williamson, in Madison County and as do most coal miners, John Sminchak probably had an extremely hard life and his family probably would not have been one of much wealth. John Sminchak’s parents were named John Sminchak and Catherine Taratula. Elona’s parents were Andrew Lenger and Mary Sirotnak. All four of these people never came to America and presumably were born and died in Czechoslovakia.
