1831 Aug 20 - Manchester Times and Gazette - Oldham Highway robbery -- James Farrar, a coal miner, was brought
before the magistrates, having surrendered himself on Thursday, as having been an accomplice in the
robbery of a person named Hulley, about one o'clock in the morning of Tuesday week, near Dryclough,
when he and a person named Standring, robbed Hulley of a watch, and one shilling and sixpence in
silver, and also of a gimblet. Stranding was apprehended on the day of the robbery was committed, and
sent to Lancaster, where he was tried on Friday, and found guilty, and condemned to death, when he
confessed that Farrar was an accomplice. Farrar, previously, fearing that he should be taken, had
voluntarily surrendered himself.
Hulley, the prosecutor, stated, that on Monday evening week, he went from Shaw, and passed through
Royton and, between which place and Edge-Lane, about one o'clock on Tuesday morning, he was
overtaken by a man, who ran past him, and, immediately after, he heard two other men behind him,
one of whom was Standring, but the other he could not swear to, (which was Farrar, by his own
confession); that Standring took from him his watch, one shilling and sixpence in silver, and a small
gimblet, while the other stood behind him, and throttled him, but he could not say that it was Farrar, as
he had not an opportunity of seeing his countenance at the time. The prisoner Farrar, acknowledged that
it was he who held Hulley while Standring robbed him. He was committed to Lancaster; the magistrate
observing, he hoped the court would extend their clemency towards him, as he had voluntarily avowed
a participation in the crime. A person, named Schofield, said that he was the person who ran past
Hulley, before the robbery was committed, and that Standring wished him to join them, but he refused.

At the petty sessions on Thursday, a number of persons were convicted in penalties of £5 each
and costs, for having sold beer without any license, chiefly on the information of excise-officer
Wood. It appeared that the informer for the excise had visited most of the "hush shops" in the
character of an unemployed factory operative, and that a companion of his passed off as a similar
unfortunate operative. In the case of James Hulley, the witness Meredith stated that ten men
were drinking in the house, and playing cards. policeman Mellor stated that he had seen 14 or 15
men sometimes drinking in the house.

1848 22 Jan - Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser - SELLING BEER WITHOUT LICENSE- At the

Joseph Mayall, James Garside and Benjamin Hulley Committed by John Milne Coroner 8th June 1822
Charged with Feloniously killing and slaying one Joseph Wimpenny of the Parish of Prestwich Cum
Oldham.
Benjamin Hully Born at Lillys near Oldham 19 Years of Age.

1822 15 Jun - Lancaster Gazette and General Advertiser - Committed to our Castle since our last. (incl.) Benjamin
Hulley, charged with aiding and assisting one Joseph Mayall, feloniously to kill and slay one Joseph
Wimpey, at Prestwich cum Oldham.

1822 17 Aug - Lancaster Gazette and General Advertiser - Lancaster Assizes - Our Assizes commence on Wednesday
next, before Chief-Justice Abbott and Baron Wood. The calendar is not heavy, there being at present
only 44 prisoners for trial, (incl.) Joseph Mayall, for killing Joseph Wimpenny, at Prestwich; and James
Garside, and Benjamin Hulley, for aiding and abetting Mayall.

1822 29 Aug - shown in Court report in The Times -
Joseph Mayall 24 was charged with killing and slaying Joseph Wimpenny at Prestwich-cum-Oldham on
3 June (1822). James Garside 22 and Benjamin Hully 19 were charged with aiding and abetting
Joseph Mayall. Fight in Red Lion - Garside and Hully only seemed to watch, the same as others; they
never meddled. Garside and Hully would not let any one enter the ring. Garside and Hully said ‘ one to
one is fair play’. Garside and Hully found not guilty, Mayall found guilty.

1822 Aug 29 - The Morning Chronicle - Manslaughter.
Joseph Mayall, aged 20, was indicted for killing and slaying Joseph Wimpey, in the township of
Oldham, on the 3d June; and Jas. Garside 22, and Benjamin Hully, aged 19, were charged with aiding
and abetting the said J. Mayall. Mr Coltman stated the case to the Jury.
J. Williamson, examined -- I was in the tap-room on the night of the 3d of June; John Wimpey was there
with his sons Benjamin and Joseph; I saw Mayall strike Benjamin Wimpenny on the face; Benjamin
asked what it was for? And he said it was for what he had done at Challenders; Benjamin said if it was
for that, he might strike him again, for he would not fight. Upon that, John Wimpenny got up, and struck
Mayall on the face - Mayall got hold of the old man by the legs, and pulled him on the ground; Hulley
and Garside then interfered, and pulled the father and son away;
Mayall got hold of Joseph, and they fought up and down the house, sometimes one was down and
sometimes the other; Mayall leapt on Joseph several times; he put his knees on his body. Joseph said
he did not call himself a fighter, but that he would do (fight) if Mayall would give over when he (Joseph)
wished. Joseph went down and cried out he would give over, and then Mayall knee’d him on the belly
two or three times. Joseph got up, he seemed poorly, and lay down on his back; he never spoke,
except saying that he would go home. He walked out of the room; I did not see Hully and Garside do
anything except look on like others; I heard them say nothing, except that they must have a fair battle;
Woolstencroft wished to part them, but Hully and Garside would not let him go into the ring, where they
were fighting.
Cross-examined by Mr Armstrong -- When they pulled off the father they said, "one to one is fair play."
They fought for about a quarter of an hour or 20 minutes.
Steuart Woolstencroft said, that he had endeavoured to get in the ring too, but Garside and Hully
prevented him. He did not know whether they meant to strike them or to rid (part) them. Hully and
Garside called out "fair play."
Another witness deposed to Mayall having kicked Joseph Wimpenny, after the latter had cried out that
he would give over.
On his cross-examination, he said he did not.
Mr Taylor, a surgeon, saw J. Wimpenny after his death; he was bruised on the abdomen, and
discoloured; a ruptured bladder caused his death; I conceived it was caused by his falling on the
ground, and being knee’d, as described.
The prisoners when asked whether they had anything to say in their defence? severally answered.
"No."
Mr Beckett, a coal-merchant gave the prisoners the character of being quiet hard-working lads. The
Jury found Joseph Mayall guilty, and acquitted the other two prisoners.

1822 31 Aug - Lancaster Gazette and General Advertiser - Lancaster Assizes - Mr Baron Wood, having finished trying
prisoners, on Thursday morning, proceeded to pass sentence of Death upon 18, in a most impressive
manner: -- Their names, and etc are as follows: etc. The following are the sentences of the other
prisoners:
Joseph Mayall, for killing Joseph Wimpenny, at Prestwich; and James Garside, and Benjamin Hulley, for
aiding and abetting Mayall. -- Mayall imprisoned two years, the others acquitted.

Just to tell you that thanks to your wonderful web site and quite obviously years of hard
work I have found my ancestor Mary Hulley(145)Who married James Milnes, a Mill
Owner(Busk Mills,in the war making Pakamacs but now a housing estate)in Oldham. In
the 1841 census he said Mary was born in Oldham and so we were misled. As her
parents are buried there she may have not known where she was born or quite likely it
was easier for James. I have passed the information on to Sarah O'Connor as her
ancestor was one of their daughters.Again many thanks Mary

1855 24 Oct - The Manchester Guardian: STALYBRIDGE - PICKING POCKETS IN A RAILWAY CARRIAGE -
At Monday’s petty sessions, a man, who calls himself Owen Ryan, but who is supposed to have given a
fictitious name, was charged with picking the pocket of Charlotte Hulley, in one of the Manchester,
Sheffield, and Lincolnshire Railway carriage, between Guide Bridge and Ashton, on Saturday afternoon.
It appeared that Mrs. Hulley got into the carriage at Guide Bridge, and that immediately after she got out
of the carriage at Ashton she missed her purse, which contained one sovereign and a half sovereign.
Being positive that she had it when she got into the carriage at Guide Bridge, she got the guard to search
the carriage, and when it could not be found she insisted that some one in the carriage had picked her
pocket and she re-entered it with a full determination of having the parties in it searched, suspecting the
prisoner all the time.-Mr. Porter, bookseller, Ashton, got into the carriage at the same time, and whilst the
train was on its journey from Ashton to Stalybridge he saw the purse at the bottom of the railway carriage,
but on its being picked up it was empty. Mrs. Hulley was now fully convinced that she had been robbed,
and she loudly asserted that she had been; whereupon the prisoner said if she would not make a bother
he would give her her money; and he gave her the sovereign and a half.-The prisoner was committed
for trial - A girl who was in the same carriage, and who was no doubt with the prisoner, returned by the
next train to Manchester. (also in the Ashton Weekly Reporter and Stalybridge and Dukinfield Chronicle
dated 27 Oct 1855)
