1828 18 Mar - Manchester Mercury. TUESDAY - MANSLAUGHTER AT PILKINGTON
Thomas Heaton, aged 22, was indicted for killing and slaying John Crompton, at Pilkington, on the 1st
January last: and Robert Siddall was also indicted for aiding and assisting the said Thomas Heaton to
commit the manslaughter. William Hulley stated that he saw Heaton strike the deceased with his fist. He
was then all over dirt as if he had been in the ditch: he saw the deceased at the public house that he was taken to; he (the deceased) said he thought he was killed. John Hulley saw both the men in the ditch,
and desired Crompton to give over: he got hold of Crompton's hand to get him up, and he saw Siddall
strike deceased once. He believed that the blow was on the head. He did not see Heaton strike him or
do any thing. He pulled Crompton out and then went away; he asked the landlord of the public house to
lead him there; he, witness, and Siddall were wrangling. He could not tell how long it was before the
deceased was taken to the public house; Siddall was forward in liquor.
