1865 05 Aug - Bury Times - A BRUTAL HUSBAND - Alice Hulley summoned her husband, John Hulley, for ill-using
her on Sunday last. The parties reside at Radcliffe. Prisoner pleaded not guilty to the charge. Mrs
Hulley stated that on the previous night her husband came home and began to call her and her
daughter all kind of foul names, and said he would take their b…….. lives; Her brother then came in
and asked the prisoner to be quiet. He afterwards put his fist in her face and struck her three times
on the breast. He worked at the gas works, but had not brought any money home on the previous
Saturday night , and on the Saturday night before that he had given her only ?4s. If he would keep away
from her altogether she would not trouble him for anything. One of the Radcliffe policemen said he was
present when the fracas between the parties was going on. He saw the prisoner strike his wife in the
breast three times, and after put his fingers round her throat. Prisoner said the grievance between
himself and wife was that he happened to work beside a man who lived “tally” with a woman and this
made complainant jealous, and she said that he (the prisoner) was co-habiting with the woman. He
defied anyone to prove anything of the sort against him.
Complainant, in reply to the bench said that her husband had said, as he was being taken by the police,
that he would take their lives as soon as he was set liberty again. She was afraid that he would put the
threat into execution. They had had to … all Saturday night for fear of him, and they had had to do it for
the same reason many times before. That was the …… time she has had her husband up before the
magistrates.
After the magistrates had consulted for a short time, Mr. Bealey said the prisoner was an incorrigible
brutal husband to assault his wife so often in that manner. They would sentence him to two month’s
hard labour, and at the end of that time, he would be bound over to keep the peace towards his wife for
four months.

1865 23 Sep - Bury Times - APPLICATION FOR PROTECTION - Alice Hulley applied for protection for her goods and
savings under the Matrimonial Clauses Act. It appeared that she had summoned her husband to the
court for assaulting her about two months ago, when for that offence he was sent to prison for three
months. The bench told her that as he had not deserted her, they could not do anything for her.

2003 Oct - Information from Janet Lyon nee Hulley:
This John is the father of both Franklin, Silvester & Eleanor and the 2nd husband of Alice Hulley, formerly
Fletcher, nee Greaves. He'd deserted Alice when the children were quite small and went back to live at
Unsworth. You'll find Alice in Bolton Rd, Radcliffe in the 1881 census, actually living quite close to the Turf
Hotel. Auntie Edith was very coy about his escapades and very embarrassed that he'd done a bunk and
left her grandmother with the kids.

1865 05 Aug - Bury Times - A BRUTAL HUSBAND - Alice Hulley summoned her husband, John Hulley, for ill-using her
on Sunday last. The parties reside at Radcliffe. Prisoner pleaded not guilty to the charge. Mrs Hulley
stated that on the previous night her husband came home and began to call her and her daughter all
kind of foul names, and said he would take their b…….. lives; Her brother then came in and asked the
prisoner to be quiet. He afterwards put his fist in her face and struck her three times on the breast. He
worked at the gas works, but had not brought any money home on the previous Saturday night , and on
the Saturday night before that he had given her only ?4s. If he would keep away from her altogether she
would not trouble him for anything. One of the Radcliffe policemen said he was presnt when the fracas
between the parties was going on. He saw the prisoner strike is wife in the breast three times, and after
put his fingers round her throat. Prisoner said the grievance between himself and wife was that he
happened to work beside a man who lived “tally” with a woman and this made complainant jealous, and
she said that he (the prisoner) was co-habiting with the woman. He defied anyone to prove anything of
the sort against him.

FATAL ACCIDENT TO A BOILER MAKER
Mr. John W. Hulley, master boiler maker, of Whittaker Bridge, was accidentally killed shortly after twelve o’clock noon on Tuesday. He was engaged with a boiler maker named Frank Spencer, of 41, Mather-street, removing a boiler from Messrs. W. Allen & Sons’ mill, Holly Bank. On the boiler being raised from a screw-jack, the packing slipped and the boiler rolled over, knocking Mr. Hulley against a wall and badly crushing him. Death appeared to be instantaneous. Mr. Hulley was 38 years of age and unmarried. The body was conveyed to his late residence in Irwell-street.
THE INQUEST
This was held at the Ram’s Head Hotel, on Thursday afternoon, by Mr. S.F. Butcher. Mr. John Hall (solicitor) represented Messrs. Walker Allen and Sons, Mr. J. Clayton (Messrs. Clayton and Horsfield) the relatives of the deceased, and Mr. J. Smith, the inspector of factories. Mr. J. W. Allen was also present.
Alice A. Smith, wife of Harold Smith, and sister of deceased, gave evidence of identification.
Frank Spencer said deceased himself had charge of the work.
The Coroner: How far had you got with the work? - In the latter end of the boiler, ready to put the rollers in.
Had you got it out of its right position? - Six inches.
You had removed the brickwork? - It had been removed six years.
What part of the boiler had been stayed up? - The bottom part had been jacked at the front.
What were you doing when he was injured? - Jacking the latter end of the boiler up to make it on a level with the front end.
What time? - 12-15.
Where was the jack placed? - In the centre of the boiler at the back.
That was for the purpose of taking it still higher? - Yes.
What happened? - The boiler jumped back, rolled over, and caught Hulley as well as myself.
What do you mean by jumping back? - Sometimes a boiler slurs forward, sometimes back.
Where was deceased? - Wedged in between the wall and the boiler, at the back end.
Crushed? - Yes.
Had he been standing between the back end of the boiler and the wall? - No, he had been kneeling down. Had it not rolled over it would have caught me. It pinned me.
What did you do? - I shouted for help. Witness went on to say that when got out deceased was dead; he was not badly crushed so far as he could see, but blood was oozing from his ears and nose. They were working in their usual way. Deceased had always worked very cautiously.
Mr. Hall: Did either of the Messrs Allen’s, or workpeople, take part in the removal of this boiler? - No.
Do you know of your own knowledge how Hulley came to undertake the removal of this boiler? - I think it was by contract. Everything, said witness, except the planking, which they got from Messrs Allen’s, was supplied by deceased; the planking was very good.
By Mr. Smith (representing Mr. Dawson): You had previously jacked up the boiler at the front end? Yes.
Did you notice the ground before you had jagged? - Yes; it was alright. He did not think that the packing they were using was too narrow. There was nothing to indicate that the boiler was about to fall. The jacking was alright. He saw the jack canting over and immediately afterwards it pinned him (witness).
By Mr. Clayton: Deceased was always very cautious in his work.
Mr. J.W. Taylor (foreman) said he had worked with the deceased, and knew him to be always very careful.
A verdict of “Accidental Death” was returned. The Coroner, on behalf of the jury and himself, expressed his exceeding sorrow that the accident had occurred, and sincerely sympathised with the family.

PTE. J. E. HULLEY
Pte. Joseph Edward Hulley, of Radcliffe, is reported killed in Fance on February 8th. The message
conveying the news has been received by his sister-in-law, Mrs. W. D. Hulley, of 63, Church-street,
from Pte. P. Atterby (Cyclists Corps, 13th Middlesex Rgt.), who expressses the sympathy of the
deceased's "Pals" in the company. Pte. Hulley was 29 years old and was a stonemason in the employ
of Messrs. Openshaw before he joined the Army in November 1914. He resided with his sister Mrs.
Isherwood, at 30 Milltown-street. He was a member of St John's Church choir. His relatives expected
him home on a brief visit in about a fortnight.
Miss Hulley, of 63 Church-street, has received a letter from the deceased's lieutenant, who writes:
I regret to report to you that No.6042 Private Hulley, was killed in action on the 8th of February. He was
going round the trenches with the commanding officer when the enemy started shelling and he was
unfortunately killed. I wish to sympathise with you on your loss. He is a great loss at Battalion
Headquarters; he was an excellent soldier and scout, and was always most willing and quick at his
work.
She has also received a letter from one of his chums, who says: "It is with regret that I have to inform
you that Joe Hulley was killed in action on February 8th at about 6-30 p.m. He was struck by a piece of
shrapnel while accompanying the commanding officer on a visit to the trenches. I trust that it will be some consolation to you that he did not suffer as he was badly hit and lost consciousness
immediately': ' He was one of the finest chaps have had to deal with and his loss is a loss to the
regiment and I assure you a very great loss to the cyclists by whom he was looked upon as one of the
very best. I have to acknowledge receipt of your parcel, whuch has been shared between his old
friends, the handkerchiefs I am giving to his pal, Arthur Tidd. I trust you willl look upon his death in the
light "that he died nobly doing his duty", and in your great trouble, I assure you, you have the sympathy
of us all."

KILLED IN ACTION
Mrs. W. D. Hulley, of 63, Church-street, has received an intimation from Pte. P. Atterby (Cyclists Corps,
13th Middlesex Regiment), that her brother-in-law, Private Joseph Edward Hulley, was killed in action
on the 8th of February. He expresssed the sympathy of the deceased's "Pals" in the company. Private
Hulley was 29 years of age, and joined the Army in November 1914. Before the war he was engaged
as stonemason with Mr. A. Openshaw, and resided with his sister (Mrs. Isherwood), at 30 Milltown-
street. He was a member of St John's Church choir, and his name is on the church roll of honour. He
recently wrote to relatives that he would be home in about a fortnight. Miss Bessie Hulley, niece of the
dead soldier, has received a letter from Lieut. Dwinning, who wrote: "he was going round the trenches
with the commanding officer when the enemy started shelling and he was unfortunately killed. He is a
great loss to the battalion headquarters, where he was one of the battalion orderlies. he was an
