2011 10 Feb - message from Rita Vaughan:
Could Milton Hulley born 1886 the son of Robert (born Mossley) and Sarah (born Stealey) be: Milton
Hullery, age 24, an inpatient at the County Lunatic Asylum, in Prestwich, Lancashire, in 1911. Milton
Hullery had been born in Mossley, and worked at the chemical works. This is the only person with the
Christian name of Milton, born in Mossley, who was living in 1911.

In 1891 the family of Milton Hulley born 1886 were living at 54 Sholver Fold, Oldham, Milton was age 5
years. By the 1901 census Milton’s father had died and his mother was head of the household, the family
were then living 8 Bradshaw St, Middleton, and Milton age 15 was a Candle Maker.

2016 24 Jan - information about Mossley houses from Rita Vaughan:
I didn't know about this POW site - so thank you for the link; It's amazing what little nuggets keep popping
up on the internet.
Back George Street - it literally means at the Back of George Street. With Mossley being built on a hill
quite a number of the terraced houses in Mossley are 3 storey. Well it seems that (originally) they were
normal 2 storey terraced houses, and round the back was a "cellar" type of room or rooms - these were
"Back (of the name of a street)".
Originally there was no stairs leading from the 2 storey terrace down to what we now call the cellar -
you had to go outside, round the block, and up the back to get to a particular "cellar" dwelling - or some
houses built an external staircase from the kitchen of the 2 storey terrace to get to the land down below
(which was not large - it being a communal area for up to 20 houses + cellar accommodation). Quite
often a family would occupy the "cellar" part of two houses to make a four roomed dwelling - the back 2
rooms had no windows - and there probably was no running water either.
What has happened since is that each 2 bed terraced house has reclaimed the "cellar" bit - and where
there may have been access to next doors the arch has been bricked up, and a wooden stair case
created from the kitchen of the 2 bed terrace down to the cellar below.
I had no idea about this - until I got talking to an 80+ lady who had lived all her life in one house - and
she explained it to me. I had spent ages looking on maps for "Back ----" to no avail - and no wonder -
there wasn't another row that had disappeared somewhere along the line. Now of course there is
central heating and all sorts going on in the cellar bit - some people have a large kitchen / utility room
in what was the cellar - and 2 lounges on, what is from the street level, the ground floor. Some of these
houses have spectacular views across the valley to the other side - but from the front you would never
know - they all just look like normal 2 up 2 down.

Note: it is likely that the enumerator mixed up the first names of the mother and eldest daughter by
mistake. There is no record of a Margaret Hulley born or baptised in 1839 but there is one of a Mary Ann
in the same year. The daughter Sarah Ann could be the Janet Ann born in 1840 as shown in the 1841
census.
