2006 29 Mar - message from David Hulley (USA) to Ray Hulley (UK)
It is nice to make contact with you again. Below is an excerpt from a letter from my deceased uncle
James Hulley (born 1908 ref 467) to my sister Joan in 1977. It is about the sum total of what I know
about Hulley roots. My maternal grandparents were from the St. Andrews area and were named Brown.
My father's name was Horace Creaser Hulley.

Excerpt of letter from James Hulley to Joan Hulley Lent Jan 20 1977
Grandpa (whom I will refer to as Dad) (ie Elkanah born 1844 ref 663) was born on Hulley Place, in the
same house I was born in, in Ashton, Lancashire. His father and Grandfather were house builders, from
away back, and their houses are outstanding in style and quality as "mechanics cottages” of course.
Mama (ie Elizabeth Creaser ref 671) was born in a valley in a mountain, called Great Orme’s Head,
near Conway shore and Llandudno, in North Wales. Her father was a fine French Polisher who was
in charge of all the furniture and woodwork in the historical buildings and town hall in Wakefield, after he
had moved to England when Mama was a girl. Mama couldn’t speak a word of English until she was
twelve years old - so you can see why her speech had such a charming Welsh inflection. Her mother
died when she was twelve and her father remarried in England. Ma and Dad met through their church in
a town called Huddersfield (I think). It was quite a nice romance, in a north-England, Victorian way.

Most of the Hulleys were fairly well established in that part of the world, which is why so few ever came
to America to stay. Dad brought mama and their first child, your father Horace, to this country because
his father, Elkanah, who was Dad's employer, wouldn't pay his own sons as much as he paid his other
masons.

So, although you might say they were poor when they arrived, they always seemed to make out ok in
America - always had the best food, clothes and furniture, etc.

The Ashton-under-Lyne Reporter dated 11th Dec 1915:
In Hottest Fighting
Ashton Territorial's Experience
Turks Attacks Repulsed
An Engagement in Which Great Honours Were Won

Private Elkanah Hulley, of the Ashton Territorials, second son of of Mr George Hulley,
builder and contractor, of Henrietta Street, Ashton, has been invalided home from the
Dardenelles with enteric fever. He arrived in Ashton on Saturday on a short furlough.
Private Hulley enlisted in the 1/9th Manchester Regiment on mobilisation, and has
been on active service since. Towards the end of August last he was seized with
enteric fever, while in the firing line, and was sent to hospital at Alexandria, and later to
a convalescent camp at Cyprus. He had to go into hospital again at Alexandria, and
subsequently conveyed in a hospital ship and remained for several weeks at the
Chelsea Military Hospital. Although he is still far from well he is making good progress.

"I saw some of the hottest fighting," he told a Reporter representative, "I was in the
same engagement in which Captain Forshaw and Sergeant Grantham gained their
honours. ( see *** below for further details). I was in "A" company. There was some
very hot work on this occasion, and we were hard-pressed more than once. The Turks
made some furious attacks nearly all the time, and they did their utmost to break
through. They had our men covered every inch of the way. In fact, it often happened
that when we were in the rest camp we were in a more dangerous position than when
in the firing line, for shells would come whizzing among you and bullets flying
around."

"I took part in the big attack on June 4th, and that was as hot as anything we
experienced out there. Iwas in the firing line all the time, so I had a pretty fair dose of it.
For three days continously we were indulging in rapid fire to keep check the Turks
from breaking through. That was an exciting time, and at nights we were on auard for
an hour and off for an hour. We all had to do our share, but after an exhausting day in
the trenches it took you all your time to keep your wits about you at night. Of course, we
had a good breaking-in, for when we first landed on the Penunsula we were in the
trenches for 21 days without a break, and then when at the rest camp, instead of
resting, we were digging trenches. The worst of the business was that our positions
from the beach up to the trenches were commanded by the Turkish guns."

"Yes, I had some extremely narrow escapes of being hit, as every man has who has
been yonder; what with the shells, the maxim guns, and the rifles. We were in
company with the Regular Army troops, the Inniskilling Fusiliers, and we were in the
centre directly facing Achi Baba. I was one of the lucky ones to get out of that place
alive, I suppose. I remember once we were going over the top of a hill when suddenly
a shrapnel shell burst not much more than a yard over our heads. We fell flat down,
and though some escaped, several fellows were hit."

Private Hulley had a very bad attack of enteric fever, and says it is only the careful and
skilful nursing and attention he has received that has pulled him through.

Private Hulley's father, Mr George Hulley, was in the Ashton Volunteers for twenty
years. He enlisted in 1872, in what was then the 23rd Lancashire Rifle Regiment, and
in 1879 became sergeant. He was promoted to colour-sergeant in 1884, and retiring
in 1892 retained his rank and uniform, and became an honoary and life member of
the corps. When the rank of Lance-Corporal was instituted he was on one of the first
batch to be promoted.

His eldest son, George Hulley, served in the 3rd Manchesters (Ashton Volunteers), as
the regiment was afterwards known. His youngest son is Sapper Samuel Hulley, who
is at present at Southport in training with the Lancashire Royal Engineers.
-----------------------------------------------
***
During 7th and 8th August 1915 thirty Ashton Territorials were killed and wounded
whilst they were holding the north-west corner of “The Vineyard”. During this battle
they were continuously engaged in repulsing fierce attacks. The Ashton Territorials
captured the trench after the Turks had been bombed out, and held it for 40 hours. As
soon as they had entered the trench a bomb laid six of them up. It was a difficult
position to hold, because three Turkish saps converged into it. Continuous fire was
kept at one of the saps to keep the Turks back and the other two saps had to be
watched. The Ashton Territorials carried on against tremendous odds, and saved the
position for the British forces. The Turks came right at the Ashton Territorials. Some of
the lads in their excitement caught the Turkish bombs before they exploded and
hurled them back again. Whilst doing this three of them had their hands blown off.
The Ashton Territorials fought coolly and kept picking off the Turks. The Turks were
determined to get the trench back. Had the Ashton Territorials lost the position the
Turks would have taken them prisoner. Lieutenant William Thomas Forshaw of the
Ashton Territorials won a Victoria Cross in this battle, it was the first Victoria Cross
awarded to the 42nd (East Lancashire) Division. For action in the same battle two
Distinguished Service Orders and six Distinguished Conduct Medals were also
awarded. Lieutenant Forshaw was in charge of the firing line in the trench which was
in a dangerous part of “The Vineyard”. At one stage barricades of sandbags had to be
built. It was the first time Lieutenant Forshaw had been in such close fighting but he
put courage into his men, and threw bombs as well. Later three Turks got over the
parapet and captured part of the trench. Lieutenant Forshaw shot all three with his
revolver and recaptured the trench. Sergeant Harry Grantham was awarded the DCM.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia - Gallipoli, Mesopotamia and Palestine
Six Territorial battalions of the regiment formed part of the 42nd East Lancashire
Division......
Many of the Manchester battalions took part in the Third Battle of Krithia on the 4th
June 1915.....
The 127th (Manchester) Brigade reached their first objective, as well as managing to
advance a further 1000 yards, capturing 217 Turkish soldiers in the process. In all, it
was quite a successful attack by the 42nd Division. Just a few hours later, however,
the brigade was forced to withdraw on account of a Turkish counter-attack that
threatened their flanks. Further fighting took place at the positions the British had
withdrawn to and were soon repulsed after many days fighting.

Thank you for your letter & information, I'm sorry I can't be much more help except to say that
my husband's mother's father was Sam Hulley he was 90 when he died, which was a few years before I
was married so he must have been born in the 1800s. Also there was a brother named William as well
as Albert, who my husband was named after. I myself am 79 so theywere all born in the 1800s maybe
it's another family, I don't know. My husband's mother lived in Crompton Street A-u-L , as I myself was so

Dear Mr Hulley
I read in the Reporter you were looking for anyone that may know about a
family called Hulley, in Ashton under Lyne. I don't know if this is any use to you, but
my husband's mother was Mary Ann Hulley she lived in Ashton she had a brother
Albert Hulley, who was in business as a butcher, also, a sister Clara Hulley, who was
married to Ferguson. My husband was born in 1909, so his mother would be living in
Ashton before 1900, Anyway, I thought I would see if it was any help to you. Best of
Luck.
