2001 15 Aug - email from John Capel:
Dear Ray,
My father changed the family name from Van Heythuysen to Capel in 1928. His gt
grandfather, Capel Van Heythuysen, had married Sophia Hulley in London in 1821. I
think she had two sisters, Sarah and Elizabeth. Her son, Capel Thomas Van
Heythuysen, was orphaned as a child, I think. The mystery is that although I can find
out heaps of information, going back as far as 1511, I am badly informed about what
happened to my ancestors in the 1820s. It is just possible you know when she died
and the circumstances. The VH family were well off, but my branch coming from Capel
and Sophia seemed to have been ostracised for reasons unknown to me. Had he
made an unsuitable marriage? The orphan was brought up by an uncle and the
apprenticed to a bookbinder and left to fend for himself.
John Capel

2001 16 Aug - reply from Ray Hulley:
John
You have shone a light on an otherwise dark corner of Hulley Family History! Although
it is not yet on my Home Page, I have details of the Hulley/Van Heythusen link in my
records, taken from the IGI and subsequent checks of the records at the London
Metropolitan Archives (LMA).
I have a rough family tree showing the ancestors of Sophia ie father, uncle,
grandfather, her 4 sisters and 1 brother. The family were very talented in painting and
her uncle Harry exhibited at the RA. He finished up in Bath in 1783 and died there in
1832. If you want to find out what happened to Sophia then you would need to check
the GRO death indexes at the family Records Centre. Do you know whether there are
any van Heythusen wills knocking about in the 19th century? Thes would provide vital
information about the family. Also, if they were in business then they should be listed
in the London trades directories held at the Guildhall Library in the city.
If you would like a photocopy of what I've produced to date, just let me have your
postal address.
Best wishes
Ray

2001 17 Aug - email from John Capel:
Dear Ray,
Thank you for your long and helpful reply. I would like those details: Maryport House,
Usk, Monmouthshire, NP15 1AF.
I have searched and not found her death. Their child was born 32 weeks after the
wedding and this may indicate he was already on the way. The VHs were at that time
quite a wealthy family and if the Hulleys were not in their class (this was how people
thought at the time) they may have washed their hands of their son. Mary Hulley and
Anne Seymour were the only witnesses at the marriage and the absence of anyone
from his family seems significant. In the register he describes himself: Mariner Native
of Africa. For a long time I imagined he must have been from another branch of the
family with roots in Africa, but as a result of discovering his father's will I learned of a
family connection with St Mary, Cray and that led me to the Baptismal Register. He
was certainly the son of Gerard Levinge VH (you correctly used a small v, but the
family always uses V) and he was born and baptised in Essex!
His mother came from Lowestoft where the Mighells (say Miles) family had been
substantial herring merchants but also counted a Controller of the Navy and other
admirals in their line. Capel, born 1794, was the youngest and his father died in
1797. The family story (I can't substantiate it) is that he owned a brig, the 'Caledonia'.
His brothers all were lawyers and so I imagine that after his father's death his
mother's family had more influence on him. This ship is said to have traded with the
West coast of Africa (slaves have been whispered) where it was wrecked. The story
goes he died of yellow fever in Africa. About Sophia I can remember nothing being
said, but I think she may have died when her son was still a baby. If so, the entry
would be in a church register - but where? Possibly in the area where her own family
lived. You may be able to help.
I have searched for the ship at the PRO and all the usual places, without success. I
have also looked for it as 'The Native of Africa' again no luck. The bookbinder son
died in 1903, but I don't think there was a will. I must check on that again. My
experience of later wills is that they give little information. I remember my father and
aunts born in the 1880s and you would expect them to have passed on good
information, but they didn't. The maiden aunts all spoke with bitterness of having
been cheated out of money, but they were very secretive. My father laughed at it all
and had no time for family history. I was encouraged to believe it was all nonsense,
but when I researched I found most of the stories to be true.
Best wishes,
John

2001 17 Aug - email from John Capel:
Dear Ray, Since writing earlier I have had another thought triggered by your reference to painting
and I am copying to you some notes on Sarah Macdonald nee Hulley, Sophia's sister.
I wonder if you know of any living descendants? "There were some Macdonald papers that my aunts claimed they lent to my mother.
They were bitter that she had lost them or thrown them away. She claimed that if she
did have them they were just rubbish. My mother was intelligent and quite well read
(more so than her sisters in law) but she had a rough way with things and had little
respect for anything old or delicate. Nothing in our house was treasured or treated
with care. The papers were, I believe, a scrap book of drawings/paintings and
memorabilia and I can easily imagine that they were of no great value or interest and might have disappeared. What now interests me is how they came into the possession of my aunts. It indicates a connection with the Hulley family that continued
after the death of Sophia. Sarah was the aunt of Capel Thomas (b 1822) and I can
only imagine she kept in touch and the papers came to him. If I could trace some of
her descendants it is possible they have family stories to fill in the gaps about Sophia." Best wishes, John
2001 21 Aug - Dear Ray,
Thank you for the interesting notes. I cannot trace my source, but I have Thomas, the
father of Thomas Hulley b 1755, as being married to Frances, not Mary. This might
account for Sophia having a sister called Frances. Of course he may have married
more than once. I have Ann b 1734 and Sarah b 1735 as sisters of Thomas and as he
was not born until 1755 it could well be that he was a child of the second marriage to
Mary. I'm not entirely clear, are you saying Harry was a witness at the marriage of
Sarah and John Macdonald? Oh how I wish we had that scrap book!
My main object in looking at the Hulleys is to try to establish what happened to Sophia
and perhaps to discover she died in the 1820s, possibly in childbirth. Do you know
where the responsibility for upbringing the child would then have rested?

2001 22 Aug - reply from Ray Hulley:
I would guess that if a mother died in childbirth or close to it, the child would have been
brought up either by the maternal grandmother or by a unmarried sister. Sophia had
both Elizabeth and Mary Ann to rely on but you would need to find out more about the
child (if you know that there was one) before going much further with this line of
enquiry. Incidentally I have a copy of the 1881 census of England, Wales and Scotland
and have found 2 van Heythuysen entries. Do you have these? If not I can send them
to you as an attachment. One is Hugh and Druscilla and family of Gt Portland Street,
the other is TE & RF and family of Shoreditch.

2001 24 Aug - email from John Capel:
Dear Ray,
I will print out a tree of the descendants of Thomas down to my generation. I could go
another three generations but the latest additions are of no great interest to you.
If I print out the tree for Gerard van Heythuysen of Weert in Brabant from whom I am
descended there are 15 generations and his 'all in one' tree makes up a chart 72"X 86"!
When they came to England in the 17th century they started to write the name with an
upper case V at all times. Strictly when the 'van' follows a forename it should be a lower
case 'v'.
Hugh, who appears on the 1881 census, has many descendants in Australia today and
I am in touch with some of them. TC and RF were my grandparents. Thomas died
before I was born and Rosina Fanny I remember well! Three spinster daughters (my
aunts) lived with her only a few doors from the house in which I grew up. They bitterly
resented my father changing his name. As a result there are now no VHs in England as
he was the only son of Thomas Capel VH and RF.
Capel, who married Sophia, named his son Capel Thomas and I guess the Thomas
comes from the Hulley side. The family story is that the orphan was brought up by a
paternal uncle who was a KC. One uncle was a wealthy solicitor and another a fairly
distinguished barrister and published academic lawyer, but there was no KC. All the
family history I had to work with were a few vague stories but most turned out to be
accurate. That is one that did not! My father scorned family history as a lot of nonsense
and what does it matter any way!. My mother had no time for the VH family and told me
the stories that the east end bookbinders were in any way connected to the wealthy VHs
was fantasy as was the story that a forebear was painted by Frans Hals. Well, my
researches have shown conclusively that all the essentials were true and I have
revealed so much more. It has taken me hours of patient search and cost a great deal:
but you will know all about that! I keep meaning to produce a booklet, but there is
always just one more piece about to fall into place...
Sophia's son, Capel Thomas VH, is my gt grandfather. That makes Sophia my gt gt
grandmother. That is not such a distant relationship. I have gt grandnephews and
nieces!
Best wishes,
John

2005 14 Mar - email from John Capel:
At the time I contacted you I had little firm information but now the picture is beginning
to come into focus.
My great-great grandmother was Sophia Hulley. She was born 24 Dec 1799 to
Thomas Hulley and Mary, as best I can tell. She certainly had a sister, Sarah, who
married John Macdonald.
Sophia married Capel Van Heythuysen 6 July 1821. I now know for sure he was the
master of brigs that sailed to the Cape Coast. It was there that their son, Capel Thomas
VH, was born 1 February 1822. I believe she died at or shortly after the birth. I think it
was at Freetown, Sierra Leone.
Capel's father, a successful and wealthy lawyer, died before he was three and he was
the yougest of 11 surviving children. His mother came from the prominent Lowestoft
family named Mighells (pronounced and sometimes spelled Miles) that had a long
history of seafaring. Hence Capel's choice of employment.
My puzzle is what would persuaded the 22 year-old Sophia to embark on a hazardous
journey to a place 3,000+ miles away to live in a climate that few white men could then
survive as husband of a mariner who would necessarily be absent much of the time?
The European population of Sierra Leone was 114 at the time of whom about 10 were
women.
Two possibilites occur: a she felt she had some religious call to do missionary work out there;
b she already had friends or relatives living there who would give support.
The name William Stockdale crops up. Was he connected to the Hulleys? Do the
names Seymour or Heddle mean anything (this sounds like a spiritualist meeting!).
My father was also named Capel Thomas Van Heythuysen, but before my birth he
became Mr Capel.
Capel Van Heythuysen (b1794) probably died himself in Africa c 1823. The orphan
Capel Thomas VH was brought upo by Richard VH, his uncle, I think. There seems to
have been a little contact with the Hulleys but not much.
Can you help?
Best wishes,
John
