Esek from family lore, was not left to my (Great) Grandfather as he refused to become a preacher. It was instead left to his two sisters (Idon’t know names) (Great) Grandpa William went off to the Free State where all his ventures into farming ended in disaster, as the Rindepest was prevalent. He returned back to Esek and was mainly noted for his horse, which no matter how drunk he was could carry (Great) Grandpa back to the farm. My mother was farmed out to her brothers and sisters and grew up all over this area. Her nephews and nieces we have always referred to as Aunty and Uncle as they were so much older than us, although they were cousins

Gazzetteer [2828: 2835-2946 named Manchester Fort] the eastern end of the Platrand (2)*, a
flat topped ridge in Natal Colony (Klip River district; KwaZulu-Natal) south of
Ladysmith and the Klip River. At the outset of the siege of Ladysmith*, this was the
only feature of the ridge included within the defensive perimeter, this sector being
commanded by Maj-Gen I.S.M. Hamilton. The defences comprised four forts held by
the 1st The Manchester regiment, reinforced by the 42nd battery Royal Field
Artillery. An attack by commandos from the Orange Free State was repulsed on 9
November 1899. On the night of 5 January 1900, commandos from the South
African Republic mounted a determined attack and early that morning under the
covering fire of the Vryheid, Utrecht and Wakkerstroom commandos, a small party
of Heidelberg and Utrecht burghers gained the crest of Ceasar's Hill before being
repelled by 'G' company of the 2nd The Gordon Highlanders. Victoria Crosses for gallantry were awarded to Pte J. Pitts and Pte R. Scott, both (copy missing).

Gazzetteer [2828: 2840-2930 not marked] a north bank tributary of the Thukela River in Natal
Colony (Bergville district; KwaZulu-Natal) now apparently totally submerged by the
Spioenkop Dam. It was the extreme western edge of British operations on the upper
Thukela in 1899 and 1900. After Lt-Gen Sir C. Warren's force crossed the Thukela
River at Trichardt's Drift* on 17 January 1900, Col Lord Dundonald crossed the
spruit on his way to Acton Homes. Warren ordered a trestle bridge built over the
spruit at this crossing and established his principal bivouac here. This then became
known as Venter's Laager, Venter's Spruit Laager or Venter's Spruit Drift. HMG
