1832 15 Dec - Westmorland Gazette - Committed for trial at the Sessions, Elizabeth Preston, charged with stealing, on
Saturday last, a beef hough and a pig-scope, the property of Moses Hully, butcher, in the New
Shambles.

1833 05 Jan - Westmorland Gazette - Elizabeth Preston, wife of Thos. Preston, was charged with stealing a beef
hough and pig’s scalp, on the 8th of December, from the shop of Moses Hully, in the New Shambles, to
which she pleaded not guilty.
Mr. Wardle stated the case to the Jury, and called Ann Robinson - Is daughter of the prosecutor, and
attended her father’s shop on that day. The prisoner was at the stall, and went away. William Ion brought
her back and asked her if she had nothing but her own. She said no. He opened her cloak, and she had
the pig’s scalp in her hand.
Witness said it was her father’s. Prisoner denied it. Asked her if she had sold it, who said she had not.
Prisoner said “If it be yours d-n ye, take it.” on further opening her cloak, the hough was found in the
crook of her left arm. Witness challenged this as her father’s property. Prisoner said she had bought it
and paid for it. Asked her where she had bought it, and she would go with her to prove it. Prisoner then
she would not go with any such b………..s. She left the meat and went away, but came back and
abused witness and her friends. She was then apprehended.
Being asked if she would put any questions to this witness, prisoner said she could ask several, but it
was of no use.
Elizabeth Hully - The meat stolen was lying on a creel at the shop door. Had not sold it; prisoner never
asked the price of it. Did not know when she missed it, but when brought back, knew it to be the property
of her husband.
Moses Hully saw the meat on the creel after dark, but knew not when it was taken away. Did not sell it,
and when the woman was brought back, knew the meat to be his. This was the case for the prosecution.
Witness in her defence said, she went up the shambles with money in her pocket to pay for what she
had bought, asked the price of the hough and scalp, then looked at a leg of mutton; had a glass of liquor
and a warm glass of ale ; saw a man to whom she owed some money - paid him, and then could not
pay for the meat, but took it away in a mistake. Knew not what she was about, but intended no wrong.
The Recorder summed up, and the Jury found her guilty.
Mr. Wardle, for the prosecutor, recommended the woman to mercy, on account of her large family.
In passing sentence , the Recorder said the prisoner had been found guilty by a Jury of her country, and
no Jury could have done otherwise, from the evidence. It was a lamentable thing to see a woman with a
large family in such an awful situation- what an example to her children. Stealing such property as she
had been charged with, was, he feared, but too common a practice; a species of property necessarily
much exposed, and the public ought if possible to be protected against such depredations.
In consequence of the recommendation of ther prosecutor, and her large family, the Court was inclined
to be more lenient than it otherwise might have been. Sentence - Two months imprisonment and hard
labour.

1833 19 Aug - daughter Elizabeth married William Robinson at Kendal.

1835 01 Aug - Westmorland Gazette - JUSTICE - Moses Hully was on Friday bound over to keep the peace for twelve
months, himself in £20 and two sureties in £10 each, on a charge of assaulting one John Kirwan, coach-
maker, in a street row on the preceding Saturday night.

1835 08 Dec - son Moses married Elizabeth Tebay at Kendal.

1836 06 Dec - died at Kendal.

1836 10 Dec - Kendal Mercury - DIED - on Saturday last, in the White Lion Yard, Kendal, mr. Moses Hully, butcher,
aged 70 years.

The descendants of this family are linked to Alfred Hully b. 1918, Frederick Hully b. 1917
