1881 10 Dec - Sheffield Daily Telegraph - THE WINCOBANK BURGLARY
A complimentary concert in recognition of the bravery of Police-constable James and Mr. Hulley, at
Wincobank Hall, on the 5th November last, was held at the National Schools, Wincobank, on Tuesday.
The circumstances which have called forth the concert must be fresh in the memory of our readers, but
we may say that on the night of the 5th November last Police constable James was on duty near
Wincobank Hall, when he heard someone near a window of the building . Having ascertained that a
burglar was attempting to enter the hall, James at once called Mr. Hulley, who lives hard by, out of bed,
and then returned to the spot where the man had been. The constable went quietly towards the burglar,
who seeing some one about to capture him, struck James upon the face with a jemmy, inflicting a deep
cut on his nose. James then closed with him, and a tough struggle ensued. Mr. Hulley, who had taken
with him a stout poker, dealt the robber such a blow as to keep him quiet and enabled James to place
upon him the handcuffs. The man was then brought before the magistrates, who committed him to trial.
For the courage displayed by Constable James he was at once awarded the merit and good conduct
badges by the Chief Constable of the West Riding. (Captain Russell.)
In addition to these honours the people of Wincobank determined to substantially recognise the efforts
of such worthy neighbours as Constable James and Mr. Hulley. Accordingly, the Rev. J. Julian, with the
assistance of a small committee, collected subscriptions with which to purchase presents. To constable
James was given a handsome silver chronometer , bearing the following inscription:- Presented to
Police-constable James in recognition of his meritorious conduct at Wincobank Hall on November 5,
1881. Mr. Hulley received a full set of table spoons, dessert spoons, tea spoons, large and small forks,
sugar tongs, and salt spoons, made of the best Sheffield plate. The attendance at the concert was very
large, and influential, and the programme was an excellent one.
The Rev. J. JULIAN, in the course of the evening, applauded Constable James’ bravery and recognised
his courage. Being associated with the testimonial, it was an extreme pleasure to him to say that he
had been supported on every side; and he would now call upon Constable James to come forward to
receive in his name, and in the name of the inhabitants of Wincobank and a few friends outside, a
handsome watch as a token of their appreciation and regard for him and his courage. (Applause.)
Mr. JULIAN said: Police-constable James, it affords me extreme pleasure to present you with this
watch, upon which is subscribed “Presented to Police-constable James in recognition of his meritorious
conduct at Wincobank Hall on November 5, 1881. I hope and trust that the courage you then displayed
will still mark your conduct in the future, and that when your children get up to be men and women they
may be able to point to this watch and that badge on your arm and say “ Our father was a man.”
(Loud applause.)
Mr. JULIAN said his task had not yet been completed. Has had another very pleasing duty to perform.
Mr. Hulley then stepped on to the platform amid much cheering, and Mr. JULIAN said: Mr. Hulley is a
family man, and if he has health and strength to find beef and mutton as long as these articles can be
used, Mrs. Hulley and all the little Hulleys need not be afraid. (Laughter.) I have very great pleasure in
offering you this present. I have been told by those who have known you from childhood that you have
always borne a character for bravery which characterised you on the occasion of this late encounter,
and which has won for you the esteem of those around you. I trust that you will ever remember when
you look at these things that you did your duty, and your neighbours thanked you for it. (Applause.)
Mr. HULLEY said he never expected to receive anything when he was called up. He had not time to
think about this evening. (Laughter.) Constable James scarcely gave him time to get dressed - he had
to finish his toilet on the way. (Loud laughter.) Then when he got there the constable said, “Look out for
yourself; he may have a revolver about him” (Renewed laughter.) He had not time to look to himself;
he was looking for his man. As soon he got near enough he gave him what satisfied him - (laughter)
- and he was now well satisfied with his present, for which he thanked them kindly (Applause.)
Mr. JULIAN said there was a balance over which would be equally divide between the two gentlemen.
(Applause.) (also in the Sheffield Independent 10 Dec 1881.)
