1854 12 Aug - Huddersfield Chronicle and West Yorkshire Advertiser - SADDLEWORTH - PETTY
SESSIONS. Offences against the Factory Act. On Wednesday, the 9th instant,
Messrs Schofield and Broadbent, of New Delph, cotton spinners, were cited before
James Heywood Whitehead and Thomas Robinson, Esqs., charged by Mr Edward
Davies, sub-Inspector of factories, with having, on the 25th day of July last, employed
Ann Hulley, Sarah Wrigley, Betty Schofield, Alice Hulley, and Elizabeth Bright,
females above the age of 13 years, after the hour of six o'clock in the evening of the
said day. Mr Broadbent pleaded guilty, and a fine of £3 in the first case and £1 in the
other four cases was inflicted, which, together with the costs, amounted to upwards
of £10. Hard Case under the Factory Act. Mr George Broadbent, of Pringle Mill,
near Delph, was charged by the aforesaid sub-Inspector, with employing one Lucy
Hulley, a child under the age of 13 years, before the hour of 12 o'clock at noon, and
after the hour of one o'clock in the afternoon, of the 24th day of July last. Mr
Broadbent, in explanation of the offence, stated that one of his slubbers had three
pieceners at the time the offence took place, namely, one full-time and two short
timers; that on the forenoon of the 24th ult. the full time piecener fell down in a fit,
and had to be removed home, and had not been able to attend to her work since.
The slubber could not procure another piecener to fill her place, so he ordered the
short time piecener who had worked in the forenoon of that day to go again in the
afternoon, which she did, and the inspector found her working when she ought to
have been at school. After this explanation the bench inflicted the lowest penalty
allowed by law, namely, £2 and costs.

found guilty of a criminal offence upon his daughter, Mary, aged 16, at Royton on September 11th. The
man's first act of misconduct towards the girl was committed four days after his wife's death. Asked if he
had anything to say why the court should not sentence him according to law, the prisoner said he had
already been in gaol for two months. The judge said this was a case not for two months imprisonment.
The crime of which the prisoner had been gulty was really as bad a crime as there could be. He would
have to go to penal servitude for seven years.

Dear Win
I hope you can understand the family tree, it is about all I know.
The Hulleys were left without parents when they were young and the family spilt up. My mother and her
sister (my Mother was called Mary better known as Polly) Eliza went to live at Mossley while the brothers
stayed in Royton. Eliza died when she was about 12 I think [c1904?]. Allan [?who] has a restaurant in
Oldham and I used to go there with my mother when I was young. I used to enjoy a free meal in the
restaurant and I used to think it was grand.
John [?brother of Eliza?] had an unusual experience when he was at work. He was a mill engineer
looking after the mill engine when he saw a man fall from the top of a mill chimney. It turned him grey
overnight.
Uncles Jim and George played in Royton Brass Band and so did Fred and George when they were
young. Banding is in the family. I played the same kind of instrument as Uncles Jim and George. I
played with the famous Fairey Engineering [sic] Band for a number of years. I don't know if this
information is any good to them, but it is family history.
You will notice the name Emma [?sister of Squire Hulley born 1859?]. Well, she married a man called
Whitran. Her eldest son Herbert was killed in the First World War. She had two more sons Charlie and
Harold who were left orphans at 14 & 11 years and they both came to live at our house. I was 11 then.
Charlie joined the Army soon after and served in India for about 9 years in the Manchester Regimental
Band. I think that is all.
Regards Jack.

2012 11 Oct - information from Beryl Jones:
I have now found out why Squire Hulley was in Dartmoor during the 1901 census. The site
<http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk> gave me the answer. AIGS has just got a subscription for 2
licenses and I went to the Welsh group meeting last night, and typed in Squire Hulley This is what it
came up with :
(see above entry for 20 Nov 1899)
There was also another small article in 1909 when he was in court again for stealing a gold watch and
chain. He died in 1911 in the Oldham workhouse.
