1894 Aug 24 - Huddersfield Daily Chronicle - INQUEST AT DELPH - the inquest touching the death of Mary Cooper
wife of Zedekiah Cooper of Delph was held at the White Lion Inn on Saturday before Mr. Barstow. The
husband stated that he saw his wife at one o’clock on the 15th inst. In her usual health. He was sent for
at 6-15 and found her in bed and Mrs. Hulley a neighbour pointed to a broken chamber utensil which
had caused her death. He sent for the doctor but she died at nine o’clock the following morning. She
was unconscious when he came home but exclaimed at 5-20 in the morning that she was done for. Mrs.
Hulley spoke of going to the house and seeing blood on the floor to the foot of the stairs and on
ascending found deceased lying on the bed with her feet on the floor and a pool of blood under them.
She noticed a broken chamber utensil at the foot of the stairs, and witness believed that the wound that
caused death was caused by the utensil. Dr. Burd deposed to attending deceased and described the
nature of the wound the bleeding from which had caused exhaustion and she died from syncope. The
jury returned a verdict that she met with her death accidentally. (1891 census RG 12/3550 f45
