- THE THEFT FROM THE ATLAS WORKS - George Ward, carter, of Scotland street, was charged on
remand with the theft of 21cwt. of pig iron, the property of Messrs. John Brown and Co., the Atlas Works;
and George Hulley, metal broker, Nursery street, and Henry Green, carter, Stancer street, Harvest lane,
were charged with receiving the metal , well knowing it to be stolen. The man Broadbent, who was in
custody in connection with the robbery, was now released and called as a witness. Mr. Binns appeared
for the prosecution, Mr. Fairburn defended Ward, and Mr. W.E. Clegg representing Green. Ward was in
the employ of Mr. Bramley, carting contractor to the prosecutors, and it was his duty to cart cinders and
pig iron from one end of the works to another. The other prisoners sold the stolen metal. Hulley
borrowed Broadbent’s cart with which to carry the iron. The metal, it will be remembered, was carted
away from the works among a quantity of ashes. Ward was discharged but the other two were
committed for trial at the sessions.
