1894 Oct 25 - Leeds Mercury - Claim under the Employers Liability Act. A case under the Employers Liability Act
was heard yesterday, by his Honour Judge Greenhow, at Leeds County Court. George Hulley, slinger,
employed by the Leeds Steel Company, Hunslet, brought an action to recover £234 from that company
as damages for personal injury. Mr Dunn appeared for plaintiff, and Mr Simpson (Simpsons and
Denham) defended. Mr Dunn said that on the 19th of July, Hulley went to work at four o'clock in the
morning, and the accident in which he was injured occurred at a quarter-past eight at night. He was
working at a steam crane lifting bars of iron, when the brake of the crane slipped and the bars fell,
knocking him down. His head was bruised, the muscles of his left arm were lacerated, and he also
suffered a compound fracture of his thigh. He was taken to the Infirmary, and remained there
seven weeks. It was now 14 weeks since the accident, but he could not walk without crutches. The
plaintiff alleged that the accident was due to the crane being out of order. Plaintiff having borne out this
statement, Mr Walter Thompson, resident surgical officer at the Infirmary, said that Hulley’s injured thigh
was now three-quarters of an inch shorter than the other. The movement of the knee was
considerably impaired, and under the most favourable conditions he would not be able to work for a year.
The case was at this stage adjourned till Tuesday.
(Oct 31- continuing) was concluded on Friday. His allegation that the brake was defective, was denied
by the defendant company. Mr Edward Richards, works manager, deposed that the accident could may
have arisen from three causes - the breaking of the chain, the slipping of the brake, or the crane driver
having taken the pressure off the brake. He had come to the conclusion that the driver must have
lost control of the brake. Mr Joseph Turner, manager for Mr Thos. Smith, of Rodley, the manufacturer of
the crane in question, and Mr Wm. McKenna, also gave evidence. At 5 p.m. there were still eight
witnesses to be called for the defence, and his Honour further adjourned the case till the 14th
December.
(continued Dec 15 - ) An action was down for hearing at Leeds County Court yesterday, before his
Honour Judge Greenhow, brought by Geo. Hulley, of Iron-Street, Hunslet, against the Leeds Steel Works
Co., to recover damages for personal injuries received while in their employ. The case, however, was
settled, the company agreeing to pay the plaintiff £125.

Note from Syl Langan -
(Alfred) died 7 Jan 1948 aged 82 at the address my husband lived at and with his auntie (who he knew
very well ) Agnes Mary Beatson shown as informant of the death. There was always a doubt as to
Alfred's age - he was older than his wife - so perhaps they guessed when they registered the death, but
we think they had the wrong copy birth certificate as we cannot find a record of his birth.
