1867 17 Aug - Sheffield and Rotherham Independent - A CANDIDATE FOR REFORMATORY PLUM PUDDING.
A lad named Hulley, the son of a file-cutter, named John Hulley, was charged with stealing a pair of
trousers from the door of Mr Eaton's shop, Broad street, Park. He was seen by Mr John Green, Mr
Eaton's assistant, to take the trousers, and was immediately captured. The father of the boy appeared,
and in the course of conversation it transpired that he had married his second wife, the prisoner and a
daughter being by his first wife. The daughter was already in a reformatory. The prisoner worked with a
file-cutter named John Naylor, who was willing to take him back. Two companions of the prisoner had
heard that plum-pudding was an item in the diet at reformatories, and determined to merit such
sumptuous entertainment. They had both been committed, and the prisoner, fired by their example,
adopted the plan of stealing trousers as a convenient qualification for a plum-pudding fare. When the
magistrates determined to send back to his master, he seemed anything but pleased with the decision,
preferring the flesh-pots of prison to the hard fare of honest labour.
