MACCLESFIELD COURT ROLLS - 1369-1370

Those members who are seeking their ancestors in the Macclesfield area before 1400 may know of the existence of the excellent indexes to Halmote and Portmote Court rolls for the period 1349 to 1396 produced by Dr A.M. Tonkinson MA PhD. Copies are held at the County Record Office, Chester and the Macclesfield Local Studies Library.

As well as the Macclesfield Halmote and Portmote Court rolls, the SC2 collection at the Public Record Office in London contains many other documents from the same period, including those known as 'Escapes'. These were filed with the above rolls and contained lists of people who were fined by the court for allowing their animals to graze on forest land. Similar to the Halmote and Portmote rolls, the Escape lists are excellent sources for the family historian and contain many names (especially females) not shown on the former. The one for 1369-1370 is a particularly clear example and contains over 300 entries. Several names are shown many times, but of the 178 different names listed, 47% are not shown on the Halmote indexes and 65% are not shown on the Portmote indexes.

I have indexed all the names shown on the 1369-1370 Escape List and have indicated whether they also appear on Dr Tonkinson's indexes. Where the evidence is inconclusive, I have denoted a ? in the right hand column of the index. The index is in two parts - Part 1 covers the references 1 to 312; Part 2 is from 313 to 413.

Escape Lists also occur in other years and are located with the court rolls for the period, although the quality or quantity is not as good as the one I have transcribed. If any member wishes to obtain more information about them, or is seeking further information about his/her Macclesfield and district ancestors before 1500, I will try to help them if they contact to me.
