Charles Edward Hulley enlisted in the British army 20th July 1840 at Ashton-Under-Lyne aged 20yrs 3 mths, height 5ft 8 and three quarter inches. He was stationed at Fermoy, Kinsale, Kilkenny, Athlone, Ireland from 1840-1843. Canada 1843-1848. England 1848-1850. Ireland 1850-1853. India 1853 - 1857. He was discharged 20th Feb. 1857.
He sailed from India aboard the transport barque "Southern Cross" and arrived in Port Phillip, Victoria, Australia 25.05.1857
As yet, from 1857 until 1863 no evidence of Charles Hulley's presence in Victoria has appeared.
Records show that an army pension [four pence per day] was applied for and granted by the Chelsea Board 1871.His his regiment was recorded as the 81st regiment of foot.

Family hearsay suggests that Charles had left behind a child in England. Mother deceased.
On the birth certificate of Charles Edward Hulley b1868 Darlingford, Vic under issue for father it was stated that there was a girl Elizabeth aged 18yrs by a previous marriage.
Census records 1851 indicate an Elizabeth aged 10 living with his parents, Ridgeway Derby If this were his daughter she would have been 28 in 1868????
