EXTRACT FROM WIKIPEDIA

The Battle of the Somme, July–November 1916
The Somme offensive had no great geographical objectives. Its purpose was threefold – to relieve
pressure on the French armies at Verdun, to inflict as heavy losses as possible on the German armies,
and to aid allies on other fronts by preventing any further transfer of Germany troops from the west. The
Canadian Corps is formed after receiving the 2nd and 3rd division; its first commander was Major-
General M. S. Mercer. On 1 July a seven-day assault began and British losses numbered 57, 470.
During this time the 1st Newfoundland Regiment is decimated when attacking German trenches. The
Mark I Tank first appears in the Battle at Somme, though premature the psychological impact is
astounding and the sheer sight of it makes many German soldiers surrender immediately. The toll of the
5-month campaign cannot be statistically verified by a single reliable source however historians have
come into the range of German losses roughly 670,000 and an Allied total of 623,907.

LOCAL HEROES

Who have given their lives for their Country

PTE. F. HULLEY

Pte. Franklin Hulley, eldest son of Mr & Mrs Franklin Hulley, 74 Bury St, Radcliffe Hall, has died from wounds
received in France. He was 34 years of age and leaves (in Canada) a widow and three sons. The eldest
child being 4 years old. The deceased served his apprenticeship as a joiner at Messrs Rigby's works,
Radcliffe and 6 years ago emigrated to Canada where he was employed on the Toronto Railway. He joined
the Canadian Forces 14 months ago and went to France. A short time ago his parents heard from a younger
son, Albert, who is in the trenches that Franklin had been shot in the back while returning from patrol duty
and a message has this week been received from Canada announcing his death. His father (an overlooker)
was for many years choirmaster at the Radcliffe Parish Church and last Sunday he began similar duty at St
Thomas's Church. The deceased was formerly a member of St Andrews Church, Black Lane and was
educated in the day school there. His cousin Charles Edward Hulley, was reported missing in June and has
not been heard of since.

(Obituary accompanied by small photo).

1978 15 Mar - information from Doris Hulley (nee Harrison) second wife of George Stanley Hulley:
This birth cert. is for your grandfathers' brother (Franklin). He married and went to Canada before the first
world war. He was killed fighting in the war. They had three sons. Many years ago a relative of his wife
from Windermere made enquiries as to their whereabouts but could find nothing in Radcliffe. I don't
know their name.

1985 - information from Olwen Hulley nee Turner: I asked Marian the names of the Hulley boys who went to
Canada and had a reply yesterday. They were called George, William and Thomas and they were born
in between the births of their cousins Gertrude [1880], Florence and Margaret Eccleston. (See up to date
details on this family tree)

Esther McGuiness

Esther McGuinness was said to be working as a barmaid in the Unicorn Hotel on Bolton Road Radcliffe when she met Franklin Hulley, who lived on the opposite of the road to the Hotel. She was a Roman Catholic and as such never had the full approval of the Hulley family of that era. Her marriage to Franklin has not been located yet - possibly in Canada (but see below) - but Franklin and her emigrated there circa 1910. He was called up and served in the Canadian Army and was killed in action in 1916.

Esther returned to Radcliffe with her three small children, presumably in the hope that her parents-in-law would support her and her family. They lived for a time at 74 Bury Street in a Confectioners shop run by Patience Hulley and daughter Marion. (This was two doors away from where I lived with my mother, Sydney and Freda between 1948 and 1961)

Esther clearly couldn't settle in Radcliffe and returned to Canada.
